A dormant residents’ association has been resurrected in the Egmont area and longtime resident and retired law educator Rick Craig has been elected its president.
“[We’re] using it as a common voice so we have some say over what’s gong on in the area,” said Craig, who was elected president of the North Lake Residents Association last summer.
Approximately 30 properties are located around the lake, which sits between Earls Cove and Egmont and north of Klein Lake, a popular recreational destination in Pender Harbour.
North Lake is one of the few lakes in the area with residential properties, according to Craig. That led to the creation of an association more than a decade ago, with residents pooling money to purchase fire equipment, but the association went dormant after the Egmont and District Fire Department was founded.
Residents who attended a meeting last August chose to resurrect the association – which has a bank account and an executive, but which is not registered or incorporated – to create a common voice for the community and to stay on top of perennial issues.
“What has happened in the past is that individuals tend to find out about stuff just on their own and then they’ve got nobody to talk to,” said Craig. “We don’t have any way of being represented and now we do.”
Issues the association plans to address include fire prevention, road maintenance, lake water levels and logging. Plans are in the works to invite speakers to educate residents on fire prevention at the lake on their properties.
So far, the association has recruited 15 members, who pay annual dues of $50. The goal is to sign up most households, said Craig.
Another annual general meeting will be taking place this summer and a newsletter will be published.
