The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) will be accepting rebate applications for the purchase of large rainwater cisterns starting March 16.

The SCRD said in a release that rebates are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and apply to property owners with an SCRD water utilities account who have purchased a cistern with a minimum storage volume of 4,500 litres.

Pre-approval application forms, including designs, will be accepted until the $28,500 budgeted for the rebate is exhausted. If the 2020 budget is approved, however, that amount could increase by $15,000 for up to 87 rebates.

Rebates are worth $500 for a 4,500-litre cistern and $1,000 for cisterns with a minimum storage of 9,000 litres. Former recipients are eligible if they purchase a second 4,500-litre cistern.

According to the release, “Rainwater harvesting and storage reduces dependence on treated drinking water for outdoor water uses like gardening and car washing, on a schedule that suits the needs of the household.”
