Hit and Run: Information Wanted
• On March 10 at approximately 1:45 p.m., a grey van, possibly a Pontiac Montana, backed into a truck parked on Turnstone Crescent, Sechelt, causing significant damage. The grey van fled the scene on Trail Avenue with a smashed rear window. Anyone with information about this hit and run is asked to call the RCMP at 604-885-2266 or Crimestoppers 1-800-222-8477 quoting file number SC RCMP 18-1492.
Impaired Driving
• On March 6, police witnessed a possible impaired driver southbound on Highway 101 near Roberts Creek Road, Roberts Creek. The suspect vehicle was seen drifting over the fog line, swerving back well over the yellow double solid centre lines and slowing down excessively to negotiate a turn. Police initiated a traffic stop and noticed that the driver was exhibiting signs of impairment. The driver denied any alcohol or illegal drug consumption but advised he’d taken some strong prescription medication earlier in the day. The driver was given a Standard Field Sobriety Test which confirmed he was affected by the drugs. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and as he was already a suspended driver, the driver was also given an appearance notice for court for driving while suspended. The file is still under investigation.
Collision
• On March 7, police attended a three-vehicle incident in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after the driver of the first vehicle reversed at high speed out of a parking stall straight across the lot, scraped a second vehicle beside it, and then backed into a third parked vehicle. The driver of the first vehicle, who was not impaired, advised she’d thought she was pressing the brake and just kept reversing faster and faster before coming to a stop. The driver fortunately did not suffer any life-threatening injuries but her vehicle sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene. The other two vehicles sustained some damage but were still operational. A medical fitness review has been requested for the driver.
Suspicious Activity
• On March 7, police attended a suspicious person report near Nickerson Road and Norwest Bay Road, West Sechelt, after several sightings of a tall male wearing a “Scream” Halloween mask, white shirt and black shorts, and swinging a hammer. Multiple police units patrolled the area and located the suspect at his home nearby. The male youth, who was apologetic, admitted that he’d been wearing his mask for fun and had just been hammering things at the end of his driveway.
