Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for March 16 to 25:

Impaired Driving Collision

• On March 21, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 400 block of Gower Point Road, Gibsons, after a witness reported a vehicle had gone off road, struck a street sign and rolled into a tree. Police noted the driver, who did not sustain any serious injuries, was exhibiting signs of impairment by alcohol. The driver was taken to the detachment for a breath demand but was uncooperative, attempted to flee custody, and would not provide a proper breath sample. The driver was arrested and released on a promise to appear at court for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, refusal to provide a breath sample, and escape lawful custody. The driver also received a 24-hour driving prohibition, an administrative driving prohibition, and a vehicle impoundment.

• On March 25, police attended a report of a running vehicle stopped up against a light pole in the 5500 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, and the driver sleeping inside. The driver was roused and as he was exhibiting signs of possible impairment by alcohol, was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After two fail results, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. No damage was reported to either the vehicle or the light pole. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Fraud

• On March 18, a Coast resident reported falling for a common scam after receiving two calls from a male claiming to be the resident’s grandson. The scammer told the resident that he was in trouble and needed money, and each time, the resident sent a large sum of cash through a wire transfer to someone in a foreign country, as per her “grandson’s” request. She later confirmed her actual grandson was fine and had not called her. Unfortunately, it is unlikely the funds are recoverable. Collision

• On March 21, police attended a two-vehicle collision in the 4700 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, after a southbound vehicle stopped in front of a crosswalk for a pedestrian. The second vehicle driver, not noticing that the vehicle in front of him was stopped, was unable to brake in time and collided into the rear of the first vehicle. No major injuries were reported by either vehicle driver, but both vehicles sustained some damage. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On March 22, police attended a three-vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Selma Park Road, after a southbound vehicle stopped to make a left turn onto Selma Park Road. A second vehicle slowed and came to a stop but both the first and second vehicle drivers noted that the third approaching vehicle did not appear to be slowing down. The third vehicle struck the second vehicle, pushing it into the rear of the first vehicle. The first vehicle, which sustained minor damage, was able to drive off the roadway and park. Both the third and second vehicles sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene. No life-threatening injuries were reported. The third vehicle driver reported that she did not notice the vehicles were stopped in front of her and failed to stop in time. The third vehicle driver was issued a violation ticket for following too closely and the matter has been referred to ICBC.

• Late on March 23, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 4900 block of Francis Peninsula Road near Kent Road, Madeira Park. The first vehicle appeared to have been towing the second vehicle on an unlicensed trailer. The driver of the first vehicle advised that a pin had popped on the trailer connection, causing the trailer and truck to veer sideways over a stop sign and into a hydro pole before coming to a stop. No injuries were reported. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation tickets for inadequate connection for the trailer, windshield that impairs driver’s vision, and no insurance. The trailer and truck were towed from the scene and the matter has been referred to ICBC.
