RCMP deal with rash of impaired charges

Impaired drivers remain a concern on the Sunshine Coast. Be smart and stay safe this holiday season.

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Dec. 2 to 9:

Impaired Driving

• Early on Dec. 5, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 5700 block of Surf Circle, Sechelt, after a witness reported a vehicle in the ditch. Police located the uninjured driver outside the vehicle, who advised that he’d been reaching for a soft drink when he lost control and ended up in the ditch. While speaking with the driver, police detected possible signs of intoxication by alcohol and gave the driver a roadside alcohol screening test. After a “warn” result, the driver was issued a three-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

• On Dec. 8, a witness reported a male slumped over the steering wheel in a vehicle parked in the 5500 block of Ocean Avenue, Sechelt. Police located the male in his vehicle and were able to rouse him. The male, who was exhibiting signs of impairment by alcohol, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

• On Dec. 8, police initiated a traffic stop with a known prohibited driver on Narrows Road at Summit Road, Madeira Park, and noted the driver exhibiting signs of possible impairment by alcohol. The driver, who advised he had consumed alcohol a couple of hours prior to driving, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, his vehicle was impounded for 30 days, and he was also served a promise to appear for court for driving while prohibited. The file is still under investigation.

• On Dec. 9, while conducting a roadblock on Highway 101 near Largo Road, Roberts Creek, police stopped a vehicle driven by a male who was exhibiting signs of possible impairment. The male advised he’d consumed alcohol several hours prior, and was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After a “warn” result, the driver was issued a three-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

• On Dec. 8, during a roadblock set up on Highway 101 at Largo Road, Roberts Creek, police stopped a driver who did not have his driver’s licence on him. While running the driver’s information, police learned the driver was prohibited from driving and did not possess a valid B.C. driver’s licence. Police then noted signs of possible alcohol impairment and gave the driver a roadside alcohol screening test. After a “warn” result, the driver was issued a seven-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. The driver was also served an appearance notice for driving while prohibited. The file is still under investigation.

• On Dec. 8, police stopped a possible impaired driver during a roadblock set up on Highway 101 near Largo Road, Roberts Creek, after the driver advised she’d consumed alcohol a couple of hours prior to driving. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of possible impairment by alcohol, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Collision

• On Dec. 9, police attended a motor vehicle incident involving a pedestrian on Gibsons Way at Shaw Road, Gibsons, after a vehicle attempting a left turn onto Gibsons Way struck a pedestrian in the marked crosswalk at slow speed. The driver, who remained on scene, advised police that she had not seen the pedestrian. The pedestrian was taken to Sechelt Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian at green light. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Dec. 6, police attended a two-vehicle incident near the intersection of Gibsons Way and Sunnycrest Road, Gibsons, after the first vehicle exited a parking lot without the driver noticing oncoming eastbound traffic. The second vehicle driver was unable to stop in time and collided into the front driver’s side of the first vehicle. The second vehicle driver and passenger were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and assessment. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Attempted Break and Enter

Early on Dec. 9, a suspect smashed a window at a business in the 5500 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt, possibly by kicking it. Police attended along with a property representative, and determined that while damage to the window was extensive, no entry to the premises was gained and nothing appeared to be stolen.

Found Property

• On Dec. 5, staff from the TD Bank in Sechelt turned in a bag of children’s items. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference file 2018-8403.
