Sunshine Coast RCMP say one of the detachment’s officers was involved in an accident Monday night near Wakefield Road.
Const. Karen Whitby said the accident happened around 8 p.m. as the officer was driving north on the Sunshine Coast Highway to provide backup for an officer working in Madeira Park.
The northbound police cruiser went off the road and struck a large boulder, sliding down an embankment and damaging a natural gas line. Crews from Fortis had to be brought in to deal with the gas leak.
The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services unit is investigating the crash. The officer behind the wheel was not seriously injured.
