The Queen of Surrey is off the Langdale-Horseshoe Bay route for its annual refit.
The work began Sunday with divers doing an underwater survey of the ferry’s hull.
Deborah Marshall of BC Ferries said the diving was done at Langdale because the visibility is poor in the waters around the fleet maintenance drydock on the Fraser River, where the rest of the refit work will be done.
Marshall said this refit will mark the second phase of the Surrey’s “three-quarter life upgrade” and will include a complete rebuild of one of the main engines, and updates to navigational equipment, some piping, and the HVAC systems.
Passenger amenities will also get a bit of sprucing up, with upgraded TVs, an expansion to the gift shop, and an induction loop system for one of the lounges that will make it easier for hearing impaired people to hear shipboard announcements.
The Queen of Cowichan and Queen of Coquitlam will be sailing the route until the Surrey returns from her refit.
