Pumps at two Sunshine Coast gas stations have been shuttered because of possible gas contamination leading to vehicle breakdowns.
The ts'uḵw'um (Wilson Creek) Shell gas station at 4330 Sunshine Coast Highway closed Thursday afternoon after Shell was “notified of a product quality issue,” Stephen Doolan, head of media relations at Shell Canada, told Coast Reporter.
“The pumps and underground storage tank were immediately shut down and an investigation is underway with plans to have the site up and running as soon as we can safely do so.”
The number of affected vehicles is currently unknown. Carol Reimer, whose red Nissan Frontier broke down in Davis Bay Oct. 27 was told by a tow truck operator it was responding to at least nine calls related to the issue.
Sami Korrensuo, a tow truck operator, told Coast Reporter he had responded to at least two vehicles with “suspected bad fuel.”
An employee at the Mobil gas station in the tsain-ko shopping centre at 5540 Sunshine Coast Highway confirmed with Coast Reporter its pumps were shut off Friday between noon and 1 p.m. after tanks were refuelling the station.
The employee had received calls from customers with broken-down vehicles.
Doolan said its customer service specialists are “working closely with impacted customers and will continue until outstanding issues are resolved.”
Reimer, who was forced to pay for a cab and rental vehicle to continue to drive to her cabin in Egmont, said she was provided with an insurance claim form from the company.
No other gas stations on the Sunshine Coast have reported issues with their fuel.
