The Sunshine Coast Emergency program issued a public safety advisory Friday afternoon (Jan. 15) urging the public to use caution around creeks and streams following this week's heavy rains.

In an advisory sent out to Coast Reporter and other emergency personnel, emergency program co-ordinator Bill Elsner said the recent heavy rains have resulted in saturated soils and high surface run-off conditions.

"The public should exercise extreme caution around creeks, streams and ditches," said Elsner. "Fast moving water, debris torrents and unstable banks can be hazardous to people and animals."

Elsner said several significant landslides have occurred along high bank waterfront properties and minor flooding has occurred on some roads due to blocked or full culverts.

"Please remove debris blocking culverts on your property if it is safe to do so," he said. "Exercise caution and slow down driving through standing water."
