Mark April 23 on your calendar – participants are breaking bridges again in celebration of National Engineering and Geoscience Month with the seventh annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest.
The goal of the contest is to encourage young people to try hands-on engineering. It is open to everyone from elementary students to adults and includes a family category. This year, organizers are hoping to see a bridge to beat the Sunshine Coast record set in 2013 of 405 kg (894 lbs.).
Though the contest is not until April 23, the planning and building begin much sooner and it all starts with picking up your kit. They are available at GBS in Gibsons and Sechelt for $5 and contain everything you need to build your popsicle stick bridge.
The contest will take place at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall, behind McDonald’s in Sechelt. Bridge registration starts at noon and testing starts at 1:15 p.m. Spectators are welcome.
This is a free event sponsored by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists. Thanks again to all the local businesses and volunteers who make this possible.
