Politicians to talk fixed link

Local government and business leaders will meet with West Vancouver-Sea-to-Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy on June 23 to take part in consultations around the Sunshine Coast Fixed Link Feasibility Study. Those invited to the meeting include representatives from the Sechelt (shíshálh) Nation, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD), School District No. 46, the Town of Gibsons, the District of Sechelt and various Chambers of Commerce on the Coast.

The closed-door meeting will happen at the SCRD office on Field Road and will form part of the initial consultations in which Sturdy is tasked with gauging community interest in an alternate link to the Lower Mainland.

“The public will also have an opportunity to provide input into this feasibility study in fall 2016,” said Kate Mukasa, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) public affairs officer. “The public portion of the consultation is still being planned.”

Sturdy’s consultations are in addition to MOTI’s study of the costs and benefits of a possible highway link between the Sunshine Coast and Metro Vancouver, currently being undertaken by the consultants R.F. Binnie and Associates.

“R.F. Binnie’s final report to government on the Sunshine Coast Fixed Link Feasibility Study is expected in late 2016,” Mukasa noted.
