Scam Alert

• Police are advising residents that the popular Canada Revenue Agency scam is making the rounds on the Coast again. The scammers call and purport to be from the CRA or police. They try to convince the resident that taxes are owed and if immediate action isn’t taken, the resident will be arrested or worse. Scammers will try to get the resident to pay with unorthodox means (for example, gift cards). Scammers may also use a technique called “spoofing” which allows them to make the number on your call display appear to be legitimate. Sunshine Coast RCMP have received reports that the non-emergency police number of 604-885-2266 is appearing on some call displays, and the scammer then pretends to be calling from the RCMP office. Please note the Sunshine Coast RCMP number will come up as “Private Caller.” To learn more about this and other common scams, please visit sites such as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org. The Canada Revenue Agency website www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/corporate/security/protect-yourself-against-fraud.html also provides helpful information about scams.

Attempted Break and Enter

• On Feb. 23, shortly after 11 p.m., a male suspect attempted to gain entry to a residence in the 300 block of Burns Road, Gibsons. Fortunately, the resident dog barked at the intruder, alerting the homeowners. The suspect fled along with a female who was waiting in the driveway. The pair were caught on video surveillance and are described as a Caucasian male in his early 20s with a tall, slim build, wearing glasses, a light-coloured hooded jacket pulled up tight around his head and jeans. The female was also dressed in a light-coloured hooded jacket and had her hood up. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-1193.

Theft

• Between Feb. 15 and 18, a suspect gained entry to a vehicle parked in the 700 block of Crucil Road, Gibsons, and stole a Canon Rebel SL1 camera that was missing a rubber eyepiece, along with a 15 - 55 millimetre lens. Police remind the public to remove valuables from their vehicles and to secure them to discourage opportunistic thieves.

• Sometime around Feb. 24, thieves stole a ten-foot long 6” x 6” cedar post from a retaining wall near a bench at the Sechelt marsh in the 5700 block of Wharf Avenue. The theft would have likely required a couple of individuals with sturdy pry bars and a truck to take the post away. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-1210.
