Impaired Driving - Drugs

• On July 9 at approximately 8 p.m. a single vehicle with one occupant drove off the road and down an embankment in Roberts Creek. The driver was showing symptoms of drug impairment and admitted to drug use that day. The investigating officer was a drug recognition expert and after conducting an examination, the driver was arrested for impaired driving. Charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle have been forwarded to Crown Counsel. The driver was released on a promise to appear for court. The file is still under investigation.

Theft

• On July 10, a 15-foot ladder was stolen from a shed on a residential property in the 6200 block of Sunshine Coast Highway. If anyone has any information regarding this theft they can call police and reference file 2019-4413.

Scam

• On July 11, a Gibsons resident received a phone call telling her she had "won" $130,000 US and simply needed to pay $9,500 to cover the taxes on the winnings. The scammer then called again stating she needed to send another $20,000 and at that time a bank employee determined this was a scam.

• On July 14, a resident had been notified that she had "won" $2.5 million dollars and needed to send $12, 000 to cover the taxes. A family member suspected that this was a scam and contacted the bank and the police to report the incident. The public is reminded to be vigilant when asked for money to be sent to unknown parties. Collision

• On July 12 at 8:50 a.m. police were called to a report of a two vehicle collision at Sunshine Coast Highway and Snodgrass Road. Vehicles had been travelling west bound when the front vehicle had stopped to let a semi truck turn. The Jeep following attempted to stop but when the brakes were depressed, nothing happened. The Jeep driver was able to swing around and stopped the vehicle but struck the semi truck. No injuries were reported and the truck and the Jeep were towed.

Shoplifting

• On July 15, police were advised that the loss prevention officer (LPO) of London Drugs had detained a person for stealing a pair of sunglasses, tearing off the tag and concealing the item before leaving the store with no attempt at payment. Police and the LPO recommended the file be dealt with through restorative justice process instead of the criminal courts.
