Lost/Stolen Wallet
• On June 25, a Sunshine Coast resident reported a theft after she inadvertently left her black fabric wallet in a shopping cart at a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt. As soon as she realized what she’d done, the resident returned to the cart to retrieve her wallet but it was already gone. To date, no one has turned in the wallet and its contents, mostly identification and cards.
Motor Vehicle Collision
• On June 26, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Cowrie Street and Trail Avenue, Sechelt, after the first vehicle was travelling through the four-way stop east on Cowrie Street and the second vehicle, travelling north on Trail Avenue, stopped at the stop sign and then proceeded through the intersection, striking the first vehicle on the rear passenger side bumper. No serious injuries were reported and both vehicles sustained only minor damage. The second vehicle driver advised that she had not seen the first vehicle in front of her and thought the way was clear. Police are requesting a medical review of the first driver’s licence and the matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On the late morning of June 28, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Crowe Road, Roberts Creek, after a deer ran out from the bushes in front of a southbound vehicle. The collision caused significant damage to the driver’s front and windshield, and the driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The deer, which did not survive the impact, was removed by Capilano Highways, and the vehicle was towed. The driver was taken to hospital for assessment and treatment. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On June 30, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 16000 block of Highway 101, Ruby Lake, after the driver lost control on a bend after reaching down for some food. The vehicle drifted off road and got caught up and slid into the ditch. Fortunately, the driver was able to exit the vehicle on her own, but the vehicle had to be towed due to damage. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Break and Enter
• Between June 22 and 25, a suspect or suspects gained entry to a building in the 1100 block of Marine Drive, Gibsons, and stole a number of tools, including two full Makita drill kits in blue cases. One of the boxes had a “Space Building” sticker on it and the other had a black stencilled design on it. Other items stolen were Makita cordless drills, drill bits, batteries, impact driver, hammer, Stanley tape measures (one case had an “A” carved into the back), a Stanley hammer tacker with orange paint on the handle and a Paslode nail gun in an orange case with the word “SPACE” on it. Anyone with information about this break and enter is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-4127.
Theft
• On June 26, police attended a shoplifting complaint at a business in the 5500 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt, after the female suspect fled the premises, leaving behind empty hangers in the changing room she’d just been in. The suspect, described as a white female with long blond hair, was seen leaving in a pickup truck northbound on the highway. A witness was able to note the out-of-province licence plate. The file is still under investigation.

Police initiated a traffic stop and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
• On June 30, during a roadblock set up in the 5900 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, police spoke with a driver who exhibited signs of intoxication. The driver, who advised he’d consumed alcohol a couple of hours prior to driving, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days
Fraud/Scam
• A Coast resident reported receiving a suspicious message from someone purporting to be from Service Canada. The message warned the resident that if he didn’t respond to deal with the matter of his “account,” then his Social Insurance Number would be suspended. This is a variation on the widespread Canada Revenue Agency scam. Fortunately, the resident did not call back the number left by the scammer; if he had, the scammer likely would have tried to convince the resident that if he didn’t act immediately (and pay to fix the problem by using unconventional means of payment such as gift cards), there would be dire consequences.
