Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for May 19 to 26:

Hit and Run

• On May 22, witnesses reported a hit and run in the 6000 block of Lighthouse Avenue, Sechelt, after a vehicle struck a fire hydrant, removing it completely from its base, sending water gushing out onto the street. The red-haired female driver was then seen switching places with the male passenger and the two fled the scene in a grey sports car with green tires. Police identified the driver and are attempting to locate her. The file is still under investigation.

• On May 22, a witness reported a near-collision after the suspect driver rolled through a stop sign at the intersection of Inlet Avenue and Cowrie Street, Sechelt, and nearly struck the witness’s vehicle. As the witness was willing to provide a statement and attend traffic court if needed, police located the registered owner, who professed to not having noticed the stop sign, and issued her a violation ticket for failing to obey a traffic control device.

Theft from Vehicle

• On May 22, a suspect gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 5600 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt, and stole a men’s black leather Roots wallet containing identification, cash, and bank and credit cards. Police reviewed a nearby business’s security camera footage which had caught the incident and identified a white male suspect with shoulder-length dark hair wearing a black ball cap, blue tank top, white cargo shorts and black shoes. Police recognized the suspect and located him, and some stolen property, including a credit card from the stolen Roots wallet. The suspect was arrested and charged with theft from a motor vehicle under $5,000. The file is still under investigation.

Impaired Driving

 • On May 22, a police officer was approached by a male in the 1000 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, looking for assistance with his vehicle that had died in the parking lot. While helping the male push his vehicle to a safe spot, the officer noted the male exhibiting signs of intoxication. When asked, the male admitted he’d consumed alcohol shortly before driving. The male was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening device and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Break and Enter

• Overnight on May 24, a suspect gained entry to a shed on a property in the 6000 block of Garden Bay Road, Garden Bay, and stole three chainsaws, a leaf blower, a variety of tools and 50 pounds of frozen prawn tails. Anyone with any information about this break and enter and theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-3250.

• On May 25 at around 2 a.m., a male suspect gained entry to an empty suite in the 4700 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, and stole an approximately 38-inch Panasonic flat screen TV. The suspect, an average-sized male in dark clothing, was also captured on security camera footage peering into other suites before leaving the scene in a dark-coloured vehicle. Anyone with any information about this break and enter and theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-3263.

• On May 27, police attended an attempted break and enter to a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after the suspect triggered the alarm. Video surveillance footage captured the male suspect first trying to pry open the doors, then pulling on them before breaking the glass, which set off the alarm. The suspect fled the scene on foot before any entry was gained. The file is still under investigation.

• On May 27, two male suspects were reported trying to open vehicle doors at a business in the 1900 block of Field Road, Sechelt. Police located the suspects with a stolen battery and arrested the males for break and enter to a business. The file is still under investigation.

Collision

• On May 25, police attended a three-vehicle incident in the northbound lane of Highway 101 at Lockyer Road, Roberts Creek, after the first vehicle driver, distracted by some girls frantically running for a bus, failed to notice traffic was stopped in front of her. The first vehicle struck the rear of the second vehicle, which lurched forward and struck the rear of the third vehicle. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported but the first vehicle had to be towed from the scene. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for driving without due care. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Theft

• Sometime since May 19, a suspect stole a paddleboard from a residence in the 6000 block of Sechelt Inlet Road, Sechelt. The Pilot brand paddleboard has blue ends and a grey centre. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-3331.

• On May 26, police attended a theft report at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after staff found an empty boot box with old shoes inside. A review of video surveillance footage showed the male suspect take the box of boots, hide in a corner, then emerge wearing the new boots. The suspect is also seen stuffing a pair of new socks down the back of his pants before leaving the premises without paying. The suspect is described as a stocky mid-20s to early 30s male, about five feet 10 inches tall with olive skin, black wavy hair, moustache and goatee. The suspect was wearing a grey T-shirt with jeans and had on black over-the-ear headphones. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-3332.
