Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for April 9 to 16:

Theft

• Sometime between April 9 and 15, a suspect stole a dinghy off a property in the 8600 block of Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay. The Walker Bay brand inflatable dinghy is described as 10 feet long, white with gray trim and a fibreglass hull. Two wooden paddles and a six-foot aluminium ladder were also taken. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 18-2278.

• Between April 8 and 10, a suspect stole a utility trailer and a pressure washer from an address in the 1400 block of North Road, Gibsons. The 2014 Sterling trailer is grey in colour and had a licence plate of UWS65F. Police later recovered the stolen trailer on Laurel Avenue, Davis Bay. The file is still under investigation.

• On April 13, at around 1 p.m., a suspect stole several bags worth of manure that had been stored outside the Gibsons Curling Rink at 951 Gibsons Way, Gibsons, for a Scout fundraising sale set for later. Unfortunately, no suspect vehicle information was obtained.

• On April 12, a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt, reported a theft that occurred in late March after reviewing surveillance footage that captured a male suspect concealing a pair of headphones and a flashlight in his backpack before leaving the premises. Police have tentatively identified the suspect and the file is still under investigation.

Break and Enter

• Overnight on April 10, a suspect gained entry to a business in the 700 block of North Road, Gibsons, and stole a variety of items and a small box of cash. Amongst the stolen items are Public Myth brand leggings, yoga and sports attire and accessories, a meditation bolster, and Joy-a-Toes toe spreaders. Anyone with any information about this break and enter is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-2160.

Impaired Driving

• On April 14, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 5200 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, after a witness reported a possible impaired driver after a vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and drove off road down a steep embankment before landing on its roof. The driver, who was able to exit the vehicle, was noted to be displaying signs of impairment. After the driver was cleared by hospital staff, she was evaluated by a drug recognition expert and determined to be impaired by a narcotic. Police also confiscated some drugs and paraphernalia. The file is still under investigation.

• Very early on April 15, police witnessed a possible impaired driver on Wharf Road near Porpoise Bay Road, Sechelt, and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, advised police that he’d consumed liquor a short time prior to driving. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The driver’s vehicle was also impounded for 30 days.

Collision

• On April 10, a witness reported a vehicle on Wharf Road, Sechelt, that was swerving all over the road, almost colliding with a school bus. Police were unable to locate the suspect vehicle, but a short while later received another call that the same vehicle had gone off the side of the road in the 14000 block of Highway 101, Pender Harbour. The driver was able to exit the vehicle on her own and did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. She advised she had been feeling drowsy and that she likely fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle was towed and a driver’s medical review has been requested from RoadSafetyBC.

Canada Revenue Agency Scam

• Tax time is generally a stressful time for a lot people, as they work out all the calculations in order to determine how much tax they will have to pay or how much they will get back. It is also prime time for scam artists to perpetrate a fraud. Sunshine Coast RCMP continue to get calls on a regular basis that persons stating to be from CRA are calling and texting them demanding payment for past due taxes. The CRA will not request personal information, of any kind, by email. They will not divulge any of your information, of any kind, to another unless formal authorization is provided by you. The CRA will not leave any personal information on an answering machine. Mischief

• Overnight on April 12, suspects vandalized 18 Coast Reporter newspaper boxes in the Pender Harbour area. The mischief ran along Highway 101 south of Madeira Park and along Francis Peninsula Road in the Garden Bay and Irvine’s Landing area. Boxes were removed from their secure posts, tipped over, tossed into ditches, pushed down banks or thrown onto the roadway. Anyone with any information about this mischief is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-2293.
