Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Dec. 17 to Jan. 2:
Theft from Vehicle
• Overnight on Dec. 26, a thief gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 6500 block of Bjorn Place, Sechelt, and stole a jump starter kit and a cell phone. The jumper kit was later located in the 5700 block of Mason Road, Sechelt, but the cell phone is still missing. The file is still under investigation.
• Around 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 28, a resident in the 4900 block of Geer Road, Sechelt, heard a noise in his driveway and upon investigating, noticed that the canopy window on his truck was open. The resident went to close it and noticed several items missing from the back of his truck, including two Makita drills and accessories. The suspect also gained entry to the unlocked cab and rifled through the glove box, stealing a pair of Ray Ban and a pair of Oakley sunglasses. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2017-8551.
• On Dec. 18, at around 3:30 p.m., a purse was stolen off the back of a vehicle parked in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons. The owner, who had placed her purse on the back of her truck, left it unattended for a few minutes while dealing with her child, and then was distracted for a few minutes longer by an acquaintance who was parked next to her. When the owner then returned to the back of her truck, the purse was gone. The stolen purse is described as a plain black Coach brand purse and contained some cash and bank and credit cards.
Collisions
• On Dec. 26, police attended a two-vehicle incident on the bypass road in Langdale after the first vehicle was struck from behind by the second vehicle while traffic was moving slowly up the bypass at under the posted speed limit. The driver of the second vehicle advised that she had glanced down to turn on the heat and while doing so, rear-ended the first vehicle. No serious injuries were reported; however, both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Dec. 19, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Wakefield Road, Sechelt, after the driver of an eastbound vehicle following traffic was startled when first one then two vehicles stopped in front of her. As the driver didn’t feel she could stop in time to avoid rear-ending the vehicle stopped in front of her, the driver pulled over to the right shoulder only to find the shoulder was too narrow, and her vehicle ended up in the ditch. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the vehicle sustained only minor damage. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Dec. 19, police attended a single-vehicle rollover in the 3900 block of Highway 101, Roberts Creek, and noted the driver exhibiting signs of possible intoxication from alcohol. The driver, who also turned out to be an unlicensed driver and a vehicle impound candidate, was transported along with two minor passengers to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, who refused to provide a breath sample, was arrested for impaired operation refusal and released on a promise to appear for court. The driver was also issued an administrative driving prohibition, unlicensed driver prohibition and vehicle impound notice. The file is still under investigation.
Attempted Break and Enter
• Sometime between Dec. 20 and 27, a suspect attempted to gain entry to a residence in the 1000 block of Fircrest Road, Gibsons, by breaking a lock on a rear door. The suspect was not successful, however, and other than damaging the door, no other damage or theft was reported.
• Between Dec. 18 and 19, a suspect attempted to break and enter into a residence in the 600 block of Franklin Road, Gibsons, by using a pry tool on a back door. The suspect did not gain access, so no theft occurred, but did cause damage to the door. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2017-8385.
• On Dec. 17, a suspect attempted to break into a vehicle parked in the BC Ferries parking lot in Langdale by prying open the door. However, the suspect failed to gain access so other than damaging the seal around the door, no other damage or theft was reported.
Mischief
• Sometime between Dec. 25 and 27, a suspect smashed a glass-topped table and threw some chairs around at a property in the 5500 block of Shorncliffe Avenue, Sechelt. No other damage nor any theft of property was reported.
Theft of Art
• Between Dec. 19 and 20, a suspect stole a painting from a gallery in the Trail Bay Mall, Sechelt. The acrylic painting is on a canvas measuring 10 inches by 12 inches, is called Totem and features a close-up image of a totem pole carving.
