Impaired Driving

• On the late morning of Dec. 5, a witness reported a possible impaired driver in the 7800 block of Fawn Road, Halfmoon Bay, and was able to provide police with driver and vehicle description, licence plate number and direction of travel. Police located the suspect vehicle a short distance away and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. He admitted consuming alcohol the night before but failed a roadside alcohol screening test. He was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On Dec. 7, police witnessed a male known to them to be a recently prohibited driver driving his vehicle in the 5700 block of Teredo Street, Sechelt. Police initiated a traffic stop, confirmed the male’s identity and arrested him for driving while prohibited. While speaking with the male, police noted signs of intoxication and gave the male a roadside alcohol screening test which resulted in a “fail.” He was also arrested for impaired driving and released on a promise to appear for both charges. The file is still under investigation.

• On Dec. 6, a witness reported a possible impaired driver swerving all over the road on Highway 101 near Seamount Way, Gibsons. Police located the suspect vehicle nearby and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Firewood Poachers

• On Dec. 5, police responded to a report of illegal poaching of firewood up a forest service road off Lockyer Road, Roberts Creek, after a witness noticed a pickup truck and two males loading freshly chopped Douglas fir firewood into the back. Police spoke with the males who explained the tree had already been on the ground when they came across it. The males were advised that they were not allowed to take any wood from the forest without the proper permits, and instructed to remove the chopped wood from their vehicle. The matter has been referred to the Sunshine Coast Community Forest.

Shoplifting

• On Dec. 6, police attended a shoplifting complaint at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons. The suspect, who had been detained by staff and was cooperative, was found to have stolen property in her backpack. Fraud

• On Dec. 7, a suspect was captured on security video at a business in the 4300 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, taking an item off the shelf and taking it up to the service counter and requesting a refund. Staff processed the refund before realizing that it was a fraudulent return. The file is still under investigation.

Prohibited Driving

• On Dec. 8, police stopped a vehicle after the driver failed to properly use a turn signal on Highway 101 near Marine Drive, Gibsons. The driver, who advised he didn’t hold a valid driver’s licence, was further confirmed to be a vehicle impound candidate for a previous infraction, as well as eligible for service of an unlicensed driver prohibition. The suspect was served his prohibition, a violation ticket for no driver’s licence, and his vehicle was impounded. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Collision

• On Dec. 9, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Snodgrass Road, Sechelt, after the first vehicle backed out of a driveway onto the highway into the path of the second vehicle which was unable to stop in time and struck the driver’s side front.
