Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Nov. 7 to 14:

Collisions

• On Nov. 10, police attended a three-vehicle incident westbound on Highway 101 at Hill Road, Sechelt. The driver of the first vehicle was distracted by a bag of hot take-out food she’d placed on the dashboard, which had steamed up the windshield and obscured the view. She failed to notice traffic was stopped, and rear-ended the second vehicle, which then collided into the third vehicle. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported, but the second vehicle, which deployed its air bags, had to be towed from the scene. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for driving without due care and a notice and order for improper tires. Her vehicle was also towed. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Nov. 11 at around 9:30 p.m., police attended a single-vehicle incident on Lower Road near Leek Road, Roberts Creek, after a vehicle went off the road and struck a power pole. The driver, who was not impaired, was taken to Sechelt Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver advised police that she’d been travelling west on Lower Road when a white pickup truck failed to stop at the stop sign on Leek Road and turned onto Lower Road, cutting in front of her. This forced her to swerve left to avoid a collision with the truck. The matter has been referred to ICBC. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, file 17-7613.

• On Nov. 11, police attended a two-vehicle incident at Shaw Road and Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after the first vehicle exited Sunnycrest Mall, entered the eastbound lane and struck the second vehicle which had the right of way. Both vehicles sustained major damage and had to be towed from the scene, but no serious injuries were reported. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield to passing vehicle. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Break and Enter

• Late on Nov. 13, police attended a break and enter to a residence in the 500 block of Abbs Road, Gibsons, after the homeowners returned to find the rear door had been kicked in. The thief or thieves stole a number of items, including cash, passports, various forms of identification and an assortment of jewelry, including a woman’s wedding ring. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, file 17-7669.

• Sometime between Nov. 9 and 12, a thief smashed a window on a vehicle parked in the 3200 block of Highway 101, Roberts Creek, and ransacked the interior, stealing the stereo speakers, the entire sound system and an inverter. The thief caused significant damage to the rear and side door panels and removed the centre console. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-7645.

Theft

• On Nov. 8, police attended a theft complaint at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after staff witnessed and detained the suspect for concealing items in her purse and leaving the premises without paying for them. The suspect has been banned from the business and was released on a promise to appear for court for theft under $5,000. The file is still under investigation.

Impaired Driving

• On Nov. 8, a possible impaired driver was reported in the 5500 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt, after a witness noted the vehicle driving very slowly and swerving in its lane. Police located the suspect vehicle a few blocks away and spoke with the driver, who was not impaired but did advise feeling fatigued after a long day driving from northern B.C. and was finding it difficult to drive facing all the ferry traffic headlights.

• On Nov. 10, police witnessed a vehicle eastbound on Highway 101 in Sechelt having trouble maintaining its lane and driving at erratic speeds. Police initiated a traffic stop and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver, who admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Hit and Run

• On Nov. 11, police attended a hit and run in a parking lot in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after a driver came out to find damage to the back fender of her vehicle, and a note from a witness with a vehicle description and licence plate. Unfortunately, the licence plate for the newer model white Dodge pickup truck with crew cab and grey wheel wells was incorrect, but the driver is described as a Caucasian male in his late 30s, about five feet eight inches tall, wearing jeans, khaki green jacket and a hat. The witness also advised that the suspect had gone into the liquor store, so police are following up with the business to obtain security video footage in an attempt to identify the suspect.

Found Property

• On Nov. 8, a chainsaw found on Mason Road, West Sechelt, was turned in. Owner may claim with detailed description within 90 days. Please reference file 17-7558.
