Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Oct. 31 to Nov. 6:
Mischief
• On Nov. 3, police received a number of similar mischief reports from the 5500 block of Inlet Avenue, Sechelt, the 6300 block of Samron Road, Sechelt, and the 6300 block of Jasper Road in Sechelt. Car owners had awoken to find that their vehicle tires had been punctured sometime overnight. Anyone with any information about this series of mischiefs is asked to contact the RCMP and reference file 17-7474.
Workplace Accident
• On Oct. 31, police attended a workplace accident in the 5900 block of Sechelt Inlet Road, Sechelt, after a nail gun fell from a height, hit a step and shot a nail into the leg of one of the contractors. Fortunately, the nail did not cause any life-threatening injuries and the contractor was treated and released from hospital. It appears the nail gun may have been defective and the matter has been referred to Work Safe BC.
Fraud
• On Oct. 31, a Coast resident reported a fraud after discovering that a house he had listed for sale on the Multiple Listing Service had been put onto Craigslist in the Rentals section without his permission or knowledge. The homeowner contacted Craigslist to have the fake ad removed and was advised to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Pedestrian Struck
• On Oct. 31, police attended a pedestrian versus vehicle incident on Norwest Bay Road near Emerson Road, West Sechelt, after an 11-year-old male crossing in a marked crosswalk was clipped by a northbound vehicle, causing him to fall backwards to the ground. Fortunately, the youth did not sustain any serious injuries and was released at the scene into the care of a parent. The driver, who remained on scene, stated she didn’t see the pedestrian and that she’d had a separate minor vehicle incident earlier in the day. It was determined the driver was also not wearing her prescribed corrective lenses. The driver was issued violation tickets for failing to yield to a pedestrian and driving contrary to condition. Police have also requested a driver’s licence review.
Impaired Driving
• On Oct. 31, a possible impaired driver was reported after a vehicle was witnessed weaving in its southbound lane and into the oncoming lane on Highway 101 near Davis Bay beach. Police located the vehicle in Roberts Creek and observed it driving well over the fog line and very close to some parked vehicles. Police engaged emergency equipment to signal that the vehicle should pull over and noted the vehicle was very slow to react. During the traffic stop, police determined the driver was not impaired by alcohol but that he had an injury and medical issues that were affecting his driving ability. A driver’s medical licence review has been requested.
• On Nov. 1, a witness reported a possible impaired driver driving east in the oncoming lane on Highway 101 near Largo Road, Roberts Creek. The witness initially thought the suspect vehicle was attempting to pass so slowed down to make room, but the suspect vehicle continued driving in the wrong lane until an oncoming vehicle approached and had to go into the wrong lane to avoid the suspect vehicle. Only after that did the suspect vehicle get into the correct lane of traffic. The witness followed the vehicle and advised police where it ended up. It was determined that the driver was not impaired but had recently moved to the Coast from an island country and had forgotten that vehicles stay in the right lane here.
• On Nov. 4, police stopped a suspected impaired driver on Port Mellon Highway, Langdale, and immediately noted the odour of alcohol coming from within the vehicle. The out-of-province driver would not provide a breath sample for a roadside alcohol screening test so was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition for refusal and his borrowed vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.
Theft
• On Oct. 31, between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., a thief stole a banner by cutting the cord that secured it to a sandwich board from behind a business in the 5600 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt. The white banner is approximately two feet by six feet (0.6m by 2m) and had the words Game Point plus two directional arrows on it and was used to show patrons where the rear parking lot was. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-7415.
• Early on Nov. 2, thieves attempted to gain access into a business in the 6500 block of Norwest Bay Road, Sechelt, by smashing windows with a large rock. The suspects also sprayed an outdoor security camera with tomato juice in an attempt to obscure the lens. Fortunately, the suspects were unable to gain entry to the premises because of the security bars installed on the inside of the windows. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-7437.
Collision
• On Nov. 3, police came upon a two-vehicle incident at the intersection of Wharf Avenue and Ebbtide Street, Sechelt, after the first driver travelling west stopped at the four-way stop before continuing straight through and was struck by a second vehicle making a left turn onto Wharf Avenue. The first vehicle sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene, but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. The driver of the second vehicle, who admitted he didn’t see the stop sign, was issued a violation ticket for failing to obey a stop sign. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
