Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Oct. 17 to 24:

Impaired Drivers

• On Oct. 18, police received a report of a possible impaired driver at the intersection of King and Chaster roads, Gibsons, after the vehicle was witnessed swerving before coming to a stop for several minutes at a stop sign. Police located the suspect vehicle nearby with the driver exhibiting clear signs of intoxication. The driver, who had been issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition a few months prior, was arrested for driving while prohibited and taken back to the detachment to take an alcohol breath test. After the results, the driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition, an administrative driving prohibition and a promise to appear for court for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The file is still under investigation.

• On Oct. 18, police noticed a vehicle parked on the side of Highway 101 near Westly Road, Davis Bay with a sleeping driver inside. Police spoke with the driver who advised he was tired and was getting some rest before heading home. Police noticed the odour of alcohol and gave the driver a roadside alcohol screening test, which resulted in a fail. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and released on a promise to appear for court. The file is still under investigation.

• On Oct. 19, police attended a two-vehicle incident at the intersection of Inlet Avenue and Dolphin Street, Sechelt, after a northbound vehicle crossed the centre line and struck the rear side of a southbound bus. The northbound vehicle, which sustained heavy front-end damage, was towed from the scene. The northbound vehicle driver, who was exhibiting signs of impairment, was taken to the detachment for alcohol breath tests. After results showed alcohol over the limit in the driver’s blood, the driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition, an administrative driving prohibition and released on a promise to appear for court on charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The file is still under investigation.

• On Oct. 21, police conducted a traffic stop on Highway 101 near Silverstone Lane, Sechelt, after witnessing a vehicle drifting in its lane and travelling at a low rate of speed. Upon speaking to the driver, police noted the odour of alcohol and gave the driver a roadside alcohol screening test. After a fail result, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafety BC.

Collisions

On Oct. 22, police attended a six-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Hauka Road, Langdale, after the first vehicle abruptly stopped, causing a chain reaction of rear enders. Several of the drivers and passengers reported non-life-threatening injuries, all of the vehicles sustained at least moderate front and back damage, and one was rendered inoperable. The file is still under investigation.

• On Oct. 21, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Oldershaw Road, Roberts Creek, after the first southbound vehicle stopped to make a left turn onto Oldershaw Road and was rear ended by the second vehicle. The driver of the first vehicle advised that while he was stopped waiting to make the turn, an unknown vehicle passed him on the right, and then the second vehicle struck him. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene, and both drivers and one passenger were assessed for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was issued a violation ticket for driving without due care. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Oct. 20, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 5600 block of Highway 101, Sechelt. The first vehicle crossed two southbound lanes to make a left turn into the northbound lane, and was struck by a southbound vehicle. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene, but no life-threatening injuries were reported. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for emerging vehicle failing to yield. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Theft

• Sometime around Oct. 20, a thief stole a Yamaha motorbike from a storage area at Chatelech Secondary School in the 5900 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt. The bike, which was a project for the student mechanics program, is described as a black 400 cc Yamaha with a white plastic gas tank and a missing headlight. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-7139.

• Between Oct. 13 and 16, thieves stole a large amount of oysters and mussels from a commercial fish farm near 9 Mile Point in Sechelt Inlet. The thieves would have had to use a hydraulic hauler capable of pulling out the heavy lines of shellfish. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2017-7097. The file is still under investigation.

Mischief

• On Oct. 17, police attended a mischief complaint at a business in the 1100 block of Highway 101, Gibsons, after the owner discovered an assortment of equipment tossed around and a port-a-potty pushed onto its side. Surveillance cameras caught three young males in dark clothing causing the damage and the owner posted these images on a social media site asking for help identifying the culprits. The file is still under investigation.
