Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Sept. 27 to Oct. 5:
Computer Scam
• On Oct. 2, a Coast resident reported falling for a common scam about a month ago after she responded to flashing message on her screen telling her that her computer was infected with a virus and that she needed to contact the number on the screen. The resident did so, and ended up paying several hundreds of dollars to have the computer “fixed.”
The resident, believing the issue was resolved, did not do anything further until she was advised a friend had received a very odd email from the resident’s address. It appears her computer was still compromised and the resident has since taken her computer in to a local shop to have it professionally cleaned, as well as spoken with her bank to ensure her accounts are secure.

Deer Collision
• On the morning of Oct. 4, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Rat Portage Hill in Roberts Creek, after a deer jumped over a side barrier and onto a vehicle driving south in the right lane. Fortunately, the driver was not injured but the vehicle sustained significant front-end damage and had to be towed from the scene. The deer did not survive the collision. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Attempted B&Es
• Overnight on Oct. 5, a suspect attempted to gain entry into a vehicle parked in the 600 block of Farnham Road, Gibsons, by using a pry bar on the door. However, no entry was gained and no theft or other damage was reported.
Lost Hiker
• At around 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, police attended a lost hiker report in Soames Hill Park, Gibsons. The hiker advised she was unable to find her way back to her vehicle as she did not have a flashlight. Police were able to quickly locate the hiker and escort her back to the trailhead. People are reminded to equip themselves appropriately for any outdoor activities, especially as the daylight hours decrease.
Stolen Bike
• Between Sept. 27 and Oct. 1, a thief stole a bike from a carport in the 500 block of Seaview Road, Gibsons. The stolen bike is described as a blue 18-speed hybrid bike with white seat labelled Triathalon. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-6795.
Found Property
• On Oct. 3, a paddleboard was found on Silverstone Beach in Sechelt. The owner may claim it with a detailed description within 90 days. Please reference RCMP file 17-6759.
• On Oct. 3, in two separate locations, a large number of collectible sports cards were found. The first lot was found in the 6000 block of Lighthouse Avenue, Sechelt, and the second lot was found in the 5000 block of Davis Bay Road, Davis Bay. Owner may claim with detailed description, with reference to RCMP files 2017-6763 and 2017-6764.
• On Oct. 5, a small boat was found drifting near the boat launch in Porpoise Bay, Sechelt. No extra equipment was inside the boat, which had a numbered tag on the exterior. Owner may claim within 90 days with a detailed description. Please reference RCMP police file number 2017-6825.
