RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for June 26 to July 3:

Traffic

• On June 28, a possible impaired driver was reported in the 5500 block of Wharf Road, Sechelt, getting into his vehicle and doing a burnout as he left the property. Police located the vehicle in Roberts Creek and spoke with the driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The male, who produced a refillable plastic bottle full of alcohol, initially denied having consumed any alcohol, but eventually admitted he had had his last drink several hours prior to driving. While the RCMP member was preparing to give the driver a roadside alcohol screening test, the male decided to make a run for it and fled down the road into the woods. A short foot chase ensued before police apprehended the driver, who was arrested and taken back to detachment cells. The driver, who had conditions not to consume alcohol, was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition for refusal to provide a breath sample, his vehicle was impounded for 30 days, and he is being charged with escaping lawful custody and breach of probation. The file is still under investigation.

• On June 28, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 2600 block of Lower Road, Roberts Creek. A witness reported hearing a loud skidding of tires and then saw a truck roll over multiple times before landing in a ditch. The driver was then seen walking away from the vehicle, refusing assistance. Police located the driver and noticed he was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver, who did not hold a valid driver’s licence and had conditions not to consume alcohol, refused to provide a breath sample so was issued an automatic 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. He was released on a promise to appear for court on charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and then taken to Sechelt Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The file is still under investigation.

• On June 28, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Snodgrass Road, Sechelt, after the driver lost control of her vehicle, went over an embankment and into a yard. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of heavy intoxication, was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries. There, she refused to provide a blood sample to police, despite being told refusal carries the same penalty as impaired operation of a vehicle. The driver was issued an administrative driving prohibition and a promise to appear for court for impaired operation of a vehicle. The file is still under investigation.

• On June 29, an erratic driver was reported crossing over a solid yellow line multiple times while heading north on Highway 101 near Nielson Road, Roberts Creek. The witness also advised the suspect vehicle almost collided with more than one vehicle in the oncoming lane. Police located the driver and vehicle on Tita Way, Sechelt, and spoke with the driver, who was not impaired but admitted he’d been eating while operating the vehicle. The driver was warned about the dangers of distracted driving, whether by food or phones.
