Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following from May 30 to June 6:

Drug Trafficking

• Shortly before midnight on June 2, police stopped a cargo van near the 6000 block of the Sunshine Coast Highway, after it was observed making an abrupt turn to avoid a police road check. The 32-year-old male driver from Vancouver was visibly nervous, and police smelled a strong smell of marijuana from within the van. A search of the van revealed over 100 marijuana plants and a large amount of soil. The man was arrested for possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance, and was released on a promise to appear. His van was seized as offence-related property.

Theft of Truck

• Overnight on May 30, a thief stole a blue Toyota pickup truck with a Honda ATV in the back from the 5800 block of Leaning Tree Road, Halfmoon Bay. Police located both the truck and ATV upside down in a ditch in the 8500 block of Highway 101, Halfmoon Bay. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-3142.

Break and Enter

• At approximately 10 a.m. on May 30, a thief stole a Yamaha dirt bike, two chainsaws and a weed eater from an unsecured building on a property in the 3200 block of Linwood Road, Roberts Creek. A witness reported seeing a mid-90s red single-cab short box Dodge Ram pickup speeding away from the property. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-3187.

Mischiefs / Animal Call

• Overnight on May 31, a vandal keyed a vehicle parked in the 7400 block of Sechelt Inlet Road, Sechelt. No other damage or theft was reported.

• Also overnight on May 31, a vandal spray-painted profanities and racial and sexual slurs on the walls of a school located in the 1100 block of Chaster Road, Gibsons. Anyone with any information about this mischief is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-3174. Police are reviewing surveillance video.

• On May 31, police attended a dog bite complaint in the 5600 block of Trail Avenue, Sechelt, after a pedestrian reported significant wounds after being bitten by a white spotted pit-bull being walked on a long leash by its owner. The owner provided the pedestrian with her contact information and the matter has been referred to the District of Sechelt bylaws department.

Collisions

• On May 31, police attended a two-vehicle incident at the corner of Sunnycrest Road and Gibsons Way, Gibsons. The first vehicle was attempting to make a left turn on a yellow light when the second vehicle came straight through the intersection and collided into the passenger side of the first vehicle. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported, but both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. The driver of the second vehicle was issued a violation ticket for failing to stop for a yellow light at an intersection. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• Shortly after 5 a.m. on June 6, Sunshine Coast RCMP were called to the 2100 block of the Port Mellon Highway, after a semi-truck rolled over in a single-vehicle collision. The driver was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As the truck was loaded with various food-related items, the trucking company had to send over a second truck and crew to unload the damaged truck before a tow truck could move it. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Impaired Driver

• Around 11:30 p.m. on June 2, police were holding a Counter-Attack road check in Sechelt, when a male driver drove up with an odour of liquor on his breath. After receiving warn readings on two separate approved screening devices, the 51-year-old male was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.

Found Property

• On May 31, a Dewalt drill found at a business in the 5800 block of Schetxwen Road, Sechelt, was turned in to police. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description, reference file 17-3180.
