Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for May 18 to 28:

Impaired Drivers

• Just after midnight on May 23, police officers who were roadside on Highway 101 near Pell Road, Roberts Creek, witnessed an approaching vehicle make a sudden U-turn. Police initiated a traffic stop and noted the driver exhibiting signs of possible impairment. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test which resulted in the driver receiving a 24-hour driving prohibition and vehicle impoundment.

• On May 27, police initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle driving with one headlight out southbound on Highway 101 near Monkey Tree Lane, Sechelt. Police noted the driver, who advised he’d consumed a couple of drinks earlier in the evening, exhibiting signs of possible intoxication. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and after two fails was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On May 28, during a roadblock on Highway 101 near Monkey Tree Lane, police noticed a vehicle stop suddenly then turn around after rounding the corner and seeing the flashing police car lights. Police initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver who was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his borrowed vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Collisions

• On May 23, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 700 block of North Road, Gibsons, after a northbound vehicle crossed the centre line and collided with a southbound vehicle. The southbound vehicle driver, noticing the northbound vehicle coming at her, managed to swerve enough to avoid a head-on collision, but was still struck on the side. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene, and both drivers were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. It appears the northbound driver had been distracted. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Break and Enter

• Overnight on May 24, a suspect attempted to gain entry to a business in the 8000 block of Northwood Road, Halfmoon Bay, by climbing onto the roof and kicking in an access door. No entry was gained into the main part of the building, and no theft or further damage was reported.

Found Property

• On May 24, a very distinctive Fit Bit was turned in to police after being found in Davis Bay. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Reference file 17-3001.

Thefts

• On May 24, a shoplifter was reported at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after staff reviewed surveillance video and noted an elderly female steal a pair of running shoes and other items. The business posted the suspect’s photo on Facebook and a possible identification has been made. The file is still under investigation.

• On May 18, a thief gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt, and stole a large assortment of brand new women’s clothing that was destined for a local business. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2017-3017.

• On May 22, a thief was caught on surveillance video stealing a large amount of meat from a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt. The female suspect was wearing a white skirt and tank top and sunglasses, and had tattoos on her left arm. The file is still under investigation.
