Mischief

• At around 6 p.m. on May 21, RCMP were called after a resident saw a fire burning on the roadway on Laurel Avenue in Sechelt. The resident was able to put out the fire with some water. Police arrived to find an obvious burn pattern on the street, as well as a discarded rusty bucket with remnants of an accelerant inside. Other than the burn pattern on the street, no damage was caused, although the resident reported that the flames had been around 10 feet high, causing a serious safety risk to anyone in the area.

Attempted Break and Enter

• Sometime between 5:30 p.m. on May 20 and around 10 a.m. on May 21, someone attempted to break into a thrift store on Cowrie Street in Sechelt. An employee arrived to find that the front doors had been partially forced open, although no entry was gained. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Sunshine Coast RCMP at 604-885-2266. Business owners are always encouraged to report attempted break-and-enters, even if no entry was gained and no damage was done.

Scam

• On May 17, a Gibsons resident received a very authentic looking email which appeared to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. It stated that she was due back a refund, and could receive it via an Interac e-transfer. The resident clicked on a link which first asked for her Social Insurance Number to verify her identity, then asked her for her driver’s licence, credit card and banking information. The resident grew suspicious, closed the email, and called police. A variety of Canada Revenue Agency scams are currently circulating again, so police are reminding the public to be especially vigilant of any communications they receive, and if in doubt, to contact the CRA directly through a verified method of contact.

Collision

• Around 11:30 a.m. on May 19, emergency services were called to Redrooffs Road near Fawn Road in Halfmoon Bay, after a vehicle crossed the centre-line, drove through the oncoming lane, and ended up hanging over an embankment. The fire department secured the vehicle so that first responders could get the driver out safely. The driver was taken to Sechelt Hospital as a precaution. The reason for the single-vehicle collision is undetermined.

Prohibited Driver

• At 4:30 p.m. on May 19, an officer on patrol in Gibsons saw a vehicle driving which she knew to be associated to a female who was prohibited from driving. The officer pulled over the vehicle and confirmed that the suspect female was in fact the driver. The officer issued the driver with an appearance notice for court, and her vehicle was impounded for seven days.
