Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for May 1 to 8:
Collisions
• On May 5, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Garden Bay Road near Oyster Bay Road, after witnesses reported a red Ford Ranger driving halfway into the oncoming lane before swerving and then crashing into a hydro pole. The driver exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot before emergency services arrived. The file is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-2523.
• On May 8, police attended a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of North Road and Reed Road, Gibsons, after a westbound driver on Reed Road was struck by a northbound vehicle on North Road. The northbound driver advised she’d failed to see the light change to red and went through the intersection without slowing down, striking the westbound vehicle on the rear driver’s side. No life-threatening injuries were reported but both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. The northbound driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to stop for a red light. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Found Property
• On May 1, an iPad that had been found in the 13000 block of Claydon Lane, Garden Bay, was turned in to the police. The iPad, which had a distinctive cover on it, may be claimed within 90 days by owner with detailed description. Please reference file 17-2403.
Hit and Runs
• Around 9 a.m. on May 1, a hit and run occurred eastbound on Garden Bay Road near Hammond Road. One vehicle was turning at a corner in the road and a silver-grey sedan coming from the opposite direction collided with the driver’s side of the vehicle. The sedan driver failed to stop and continued towards Garden Bay. The suspect vehicle likely has damage to the driver’s side front end and is described as an older model sedan. Anyone with any information about this hit and run is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-2404.
• Around noon on May 3, police attended a hit and run in the 5500 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt, after a driver in a blue car pulled out from a side street and hit the side of the complainant’s Jeep. There were no injuries reported by the Jeep driver or passenger, but some damage was sustained. The suspect driver, described as an elderly female, was seen stopping a block away but then leaving the area without exchanging information with the Jeep driver. Witnesses were unable to obtain a licence plate. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Thefts
• On May 1, staff at a business in the 5500 block of the Sunshine Coast Highway reported a theft after a female was seen carrying around a pair of shoes, before leaving without paying for them. The female, who had long dark brown hair, a round face, and stood approximately five feet, six inches tall, was wearing a black jacket, black pants, grey shoes, and was carrying a black bag. The suspect was seen leaving the area in a blue 2014 Ford F-150. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-2409.
• On May 6, a theft from a vehicle was reported in the 5500 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt at approximately 2:30 p.m. The suspect gained entry to the unlocked vehicle and stole a brand new boxed Dell laptop computer. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-2554.
Impaired Drivers
• On May 1, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Geer Road near Chapman Road, Sechelt, after a vehicle ended up in a ditch. The driver advised that he’d been trying to turn the vehicle around and misjudged the proximity of the ditch. Police noted the uninjured driver displaying signs of intoxication and gave him a roadside alcohol-screening test, which resulted in a “warn” reading. The 44-year-old male, who was already a suspended driver, was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition as well as an appearance notice for driving while suspended. The file is still under investigation.
Mischief
• On May 3, a mischief complaint was made from a business in the 1100 block of Highway 101, Gibsons, after vandals used black spray paint to paint graffiti on a rear wall. Anyone who observes fresh graffiti is encouraged to notify police, and property owners are advised to remove the graffiti as soon as possible, to discourage further tagging.
