Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following from April 17 to 24:
Impaired Driver
• Around 10:30 p.m. on April 21, a possible impaired driver was reported in the 12600 block of Highway 101, Madeira Park, after the driver crashed his vehicle into a set of stairs before driving away. Police located the suspect vehicle a short distance away and found the driver was exhibiting signs of impairment. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and taken to cells. After his breath samples confirmed he was double the legal limit of blood alcohol, the driver was issued an administrative driving prohibition, a 24-hour driving prohibition, and released on a promise to appear for court. The file is still under investigation.
Theft
• On April 18, police attended a shoplifting complaint at a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt, after staff witnessed the suspect attempting to leave the premises without paying for a couple of items. The female suspect from Nanaimo was arrested for theft under $5,000 and released on a promise to appear for court. The file is still under investigation.
Hit and Run
• Around noon on April 19, a hit and run occurred in the 400 block of South Fletcher Road, Gibsons. The owner returned to his parked vehicle after a short absence and noticed fresh damage and white paint transfer on the front driver’s side bumper. The suspect vehicle driver did not leave a note. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Traffic Incidents
• On April 19, a possible impaired driver was reported southbound on Highway 101 near Gladwin Trails, Roberts Creek, after the vehicle was witnessed failing to maintain its lane, almost strike a cement median and drive at inconsistent speeds. Police located the vehicle in Gibsons and spoke with the driver, who was not impaired but did exhibit some possible medical reasons for his driving behaviour. A driver fitness review request has been sent to the Superintendent of RoadSafety BC.
• Shortly before 5:30 p.m. on April 19, police attended a traffic incident on Highway 101 on Davis Bay hill after a northbound tractor-trailer stalled, causing a traffic backup. The trucker, who was hauling a very heavy load, advised he’d likely missed a gear when down-shifting, causing the truck to stall. The driver needed to be able to back up onto a flat surface in order to restart the vehicle, so traffic was diverted into Davis Bay to allow the truck to do so.
• On April 20, a possible impaired driver was reported in the northbound lane of the 3200 block of Highway 101, Roberts Creek, after the vehicle was witnessed swerving back and forth in its lane. Police located the vehicle in Sechelt and spoke with the driver, who was not impaired but admitted he’d been eating a sandwich while driving. The N driver was warned about distracted driving.
• On April 22, police attended a two-vehicle incident northbound in the 1400 block of Highway 101, Gibsons, after the first vehicle stopped to make a left turn off the road and was rear-ended by the second vehicle. The driver of the first vehicle was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and her vehicle was towed from the scene. The second driver was issued a violation ticket for following too closely. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On April 23, a witness reported an erratic driver southbound on Highway 101 near Burton Road, Gibsons, that had passed him on a double solid line before speeding away. The suspect vehicle was seen driving recklessly all the way to the Langdale ferry terminal. Police located the suspect vehicle and spoke with the driver, who admitted making the dangerous pass. The driver was issued a violation ticket for illegal passing on a laned roadway.
Mischief
• Over the past two weeks, vandals have spray-painted graffiti on the back of businesses in the 800 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons. Anyone with information about this mischief is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-2154.
• Overnight on April 24, a vandal smashed a window of a vehicle parked in the 500 block of Sargent Road, and set the interior on fire. Anyone with any information about this arson is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-2236. The file is still under investigation.
