Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Jan. 31 to Feb. 6:

Impaired Drivers

• Around 8 p.m. on Feb. 4, a vehicle at the intersection of North Road and Gibsons Way came to an officer’s attention after he observed that all of the vehicle’s side windows were covered in snow, severely reducing the driver’s visibility. Moments later, the vehicle hit a curb while attempting a left turn. The male driver, who did not feel all his windows needed to be clear of snow, exhibited signs of intoxication and was issued a roadside alcohol-screening test. After two fail results, the 22-year-old driver from Gibsons was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Police remind drivers that all windows must be cleared of snow before driving. Police also remind drivers not to drive while impaired.

• Around 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, police witnessed a vehicle turn onto Highway 101 near Mission Road, Wilson Creek, and drive erratically until the vehicle was pulled over in Davis Bay. Police noted empty beer bottles and the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The 24-year-old male driver from Madeira Park, who stated he had consumed alcohol earlier in the evening, was given and failed a roadside alcohol-screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Thefts

• Overnight on Jan. 31, a thief gained entry to a vehicle parked in the 900 block of Stewart Road, Gibsons, and stole a purse and wallet that contained a large amount of cash, bank cards and identification cards.

• Between Feb. 1 and 2, thieves stole a large concrete gargoyle statue from the backyard of a residence in the 900 block of Marine Drive, Gibsons. The distinctive statue, which weighs approximately 250 pounds, had been sitting on a stump. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-605.

Shoplifting

• On Jan. 28, a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way reported a theft after staff witnessed a female suspect leave the premises without paying for a Kitchen Aid mixer. The suspect was caught on surveillance video taking the item and placing it into her cart, which also contained a boy who appeared to be around 7 or 8 years of age. The woman then pushed the cart past the checkouts and left the premises without paying. The female suspect is described as Caucasian, approximately 5’2, 170 pounds. The female was wearing dark pants, dark shirt with grey sweater, and a white scarf.

• On Jan. 31, staff at a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt, reported a theft after staff found surveillance video footage showing a female suspect hiding two bottles of vodka in her jacket before leaving the premises with a male accomplice. The pair, who are known to police, were located and arrested for theft. They were both released on a promise to appear and have been banned from the business.

• On Feb. 3, a shoplifter was reported at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, after staff witnessed the female suspect conceal a jacket and leave the premises on foot without making a attempt to pay for the item. The theft was also captured on surveillance video footage. Police located the 29-year-old female suspect, who is known to police, and arrested her for theft under $5,000. Police recovered the stolen jacket and returned it to the business. The suspect was released on a promise to appear for court. The file is still under investigation.

Found Property

• On Jan. 31, a bike that had been found in the ditch in the 1500 block of McCullough Road, Gibsons, was turned in. The 21-speed Kona bike may be claimed with a detailed description within 90 days. Please reference file 17-561. 

Collision

On Feb. 1, police attended a single-vehicle collision on Highway 101 near the north end of Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay, after the Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department reported a vehicle had driven off the road and into a ditch. Fire and paramedics worked to get the driver out of the vehicle. Initial reports indicate the vehicle had been cut off by a second vehicle before the incident. The driver, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to Sechelt Hospital for assessment. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
