Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Dec. 27 to Jan. 3:
Impaired Drivers
• On Dec. 29, police witnessed a vehicle driving erratically eastbound on Cowrie Street, Sechelt. As police had noted the vehicle at a drinking establishment earlier in the evening, police initiated a traffic stop. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, advised she had consumed alcohol a short time prior. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol-screening test, and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impound.
• On Dec. 29, police initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle that had expired insurance and noted that the driver was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and, after a “warn” result, was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition as well as a violation ticket for no insurance.
• Around 9 p.m. on Dec. 30, a caller reported that they were almost hit by an older white van in Gibsons, and that the van had since pulled in to a licensed establishment. Police located the van and pulled it over on School Road. The driver, who was in his 60s, had an odour of liquor on his breath and subsequently failed a roadside screen test. He was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his van was impounded for 30 days.
• During the evening of Dec. 31, police observed a vehicle driving west on the Sunshine Coast Highway through Selma Park, with half of the vehicle driving on the paved shoulder. Upon pulling the vehicle over, the officer smelled liquor on the driver’s breath. The female driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
• Shortly before 7 p.m. on Jan. 2, police observed a vehicle southbound on the Sunshine Coast Highway near Norwest Bay Road, driving slowly and swerving onto the shoulder and into oncoming traffic. Police pulled over the vehicle and the officer noticed an odour of liquor on the driver’s breath. After the 69-year-old female driver failed a roadside screening device, she received a 90-day driving prohibition, and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Found Property
• On Dec. 29, police recovered a blue Raleigh women’s mountain bike which had been found behind a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt. The bike, which will be held for 90 days, may be claimed by owner with detailed description. Please reference file 16-8425.
Fight
• Police were called to a parking lot in the 5700 block of Teredo Street after a passerby saw two males yelling at and pushing each other. Police attended and determined that an altercation ensued after one male saw another male physically disciplining his dog, and intervened. The second male felt he had the right to discipline his dog however he saw fit, and the other male should not have stepped in. One of the males had already left prior to police arrival, and no further investigation will be pursued.
Collisions
• On Dec. 27, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Trout Lake, Halfmoon Bay, after the northbound vehicle lost control on the icy road and ended up in the ditch. The driver and two passengers were able to exit the vehicle but were all taken to Sechelt Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The heavily damaged vehicle was towed from the scene and the matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Dec. 28, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 500 block of Gower Point Road, Gibsons, after a witness heard a loud noise and observed a vehicle on the road with its hazard lights flashing. Police spoke with the uninjured driver who advised he’d come around a corner and lost control on the icy road and went over a curb, popping a tire and causing damage to the rims. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Dec. 29, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 11700 block of the Sunshine Coast Hwy, Madeira Park, after a northbound vehicle ended up in a ditch. The driver advised that she had come around the curve when two deer started crossing the highway. One of the deer stopped in its tracks and the driver slowed the vehicle and swerved to avoid it but lost control, entered the ditch, and flipped the vehicle onto its side. The vehicle had to be towed and the driver was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
