RCMP

Incident report for Nov. 7 to 14:

Request to identify

• In a follow-up to a file reported last week, Sunshine Coast RCMP are looking to speak with a male who took a woman’s wallet from a checkout counter at a grocery store in Sechelt. During the afternoon of Nov. 2, a woman left her wallet behind after paying for her items and taking her bags. Video surveillance shows that the man behind her in line noticed she left her wallet on the counter, then paid for his groceries and pocketed the wallet. RCMP are unsure whether the wallet was taken intentionally or mistakenly, and are asking the male to come forward and return the wallet. The male is described as a white male in his 60s or 70s, wearing a grey “newsboy” cap, a dark coat and blue jeans. He has white hair, large eyebrows, and is approximately 5’8” and of medium build. The man – or anyone who can identify him – is asked to contact Sunshine Coast RCMP at 604-885-2266.

Collisions

• On Nov. 13, police attended a multiple-vehicle incident at the Earls Cove ferry terminal in Egmont, after a motorist, who was asked to back up a ramp, reversed too far and struck the vehicle behind him. The motorist then put his vehicle back in drive and struck the vehicle in front of him. No serious injuries were reported and damage to the other vehicles was minor. Police are requesting the driver undergo a driver’s licence medical review. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Nov. 14, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 900 block of Gibsons Way. The owner of one of the vehicles advised he had been under his vehicle attempting to unlock the transmission, and when he succeeded, the vehicle, which was parked on an incline, rolled forward over his legs, down a hill and into the back of a parked vehicle. An occupant inside the parked vehicle did not sustain any serious injuries. The pedestrian was taken to hospital for his injuries and was issued a notice and order to have his vehicle inspected at a designated inspection facility. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Nov. 11, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 12000 block of Highway 101, Madeira Park, after a northbound vehicle lost control on a sharp curve, over-corrected, and travelled across the southbound lane then down an embankment. Both the driver and passenger were able to exit the vehicle on their own. The highway was noted to be quite slick with numerous spots of fuel on the surface. Highway crews were notified, and the matter has been referred to ICBC.

Impaired Driver

• During the afternoon of Nov. 14, police witnessed a vehicle speeding on Highway 101 near Wood Bay Heights Road in Halfmoon Bay. Police initiated a traffic stop and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver, who also did not have a valid driver’s licence, admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving and was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After two fail results, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for having no insurance and no driver’s licence.

Thefts

• Overnight on Nov. 10, thieves gained access to a construction site in the 400 block of Gower Point Road, Gibsons, and stole a large number of tools, electrical wires, and copper and brass fittings. Many of the tools – including a Dewalt cordless tool set, a Hilte cordless tool set, and a Dewalt charger – were marked by their owners, either with names, business names, or green spray paint. Also stolen were three industrial lamps. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-7479.

• Overnight on Nov. 10, a thief stole a mitre saw that had been left covered by a tarp on a property in the 600 block of Shaw Road, Gibsons.

• On Nov. 11, police attended a break and enter to a residence in the 11500 block of Highway 101, Halfmoon Bay. The culprits had ransacked the house, flipping over furniture and tossing papers and clothing throughout. It appears they also attempted to steal the washer and dryer units but only succeeded in knocking them over. Numerous items were stolen, including furniture, rugs, and a flat screen TV. Anyone with any information about this break and enter is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-7509, or Crimestoppers, at 1-800-222-TIPS. The file is still under investigation.

Mischief / Suspicious Circumstances

• Early on Nov. 11, a vandal threw a metal object at a vehicle parked in the 4700 block of Laurel Avenue, Sechelt, making a large dent in the body. The vehicle owner heard some male voices in the street but was unable to get a good description of the likely suspects. No other similar mischief was reported.

• On Nov. 13, a business owner in Gibsons reported being approached by someone trying to sell jewelry that the business owner felt was suspicious. Police seized the jewelry and found one piece with a name engraved on it that helped trace the items to an unreported break and enter at a Gibsons residence several years ago. The file is still under investigation.
