Incident report for Oct. 24 to 31.
Hit and runs
• On Oct. 24, an eastbound vehicle on Gibsons Way was preparing to make a left turn onto Sunnycrest Road, Gibsons, when it was struck in the windshield by a westbound vehicle’s tailgate that swung open as the vehicle exited a parking lot. The tailgate struck the windshield right in front of the driver, piercing the glass and leaving paint transfer. The driver did not sustain any major injuries but the vehicle had to be towed. The driver of the westbound vehicle continued on the road without stopping. Police are attempting to locate the westbound driver.
• On Oct. 26, a hit and run was reported after the owner of a vehicle parked in the 1000 block of Roberts Creek Road received information from a witness who saw the driver of a vehicle that backed into the parked vehicle get out, look at the damage, and then drive away without leaving a note. Police are attempting to locate the suspect driver and vehicle. The file is still under investigation.
Theft of rabbits
• Some time in the last two months, a thief stole 50 to 70 rabbits from a property in the 5900 block of Menacher Road, Garden Bay. The rabbits, which were being bred for meat, were quite large and were kept in a coop. There was no indication that wildlife had gained access to the coop or that any of the rabbits had been eaten or attacked on site. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2016-7097.
Collisions
• On Oct. 25, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Snodgrass Road, Sechelt, after one vehicle stopped for a car attempting to make a left turn off the highway onto Snodgrass, and was rear-ended by a second vehicle. The impact was hard enough to set off the second vehicle’s air bag. The driver and occupants in the first vehicle were taken to hospital for assessment. A dog sitting unrestrained in the front seat of the second vehicle sustained injuries and was taken to a vet for treatment. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
• On Oct. 30, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Mason Road, West Sechelt, after the northbound driver lost control of her vehicle while sneezing and rear-ended an unoccupied vehicle parked on the side of the road. The driver of the northbound vehicle was taken to hospital for minor injuries and both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Impaired drivers
• Around 5 p.m. on Oct. 26, a passerby reported a vehicle flipped over on its roof in a ditch on Wescan Road, Halfmoon Bay. The Halfmoon Bay Fire Department and paramedics assisted in extricating the driver. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, was taken to Sechelt Hospital for assessment and her vehicle was towed. Due to her previous driving history, the driver was issued a 24-hour prohibition, an administrative driving prohibition, a violation ticket for driving contrary to an ignition interlock device restriction, and an appearance notice for court. The file is still under investigation.
• On Oct. 27, police witnessed a possible impaired driver drinking from what looked like a liquor bottle while driving west from Trail Bay Mall, Sechelt. Police followed the vehicle swerving in its lane and over the fog line, and also noted that the windshield wipers were on even though it was not raining. Police conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver, who denied consuming any alcohol, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The 60-year-old female driver from Sechelt was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. A half-empty liquor bottle was located underneath the driver’s seat.
• On the night of Oct. 28, police witnessed a vehicle speeding out of a parking lot in the 5600 block of Medusa Street, Sechelt. Police noted the vehicle driving well over the posted speed limit and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, advised he’d consumed alcohol a short while earlier. The 45-year-old male driver from Gibsons was given a roadside alcohol screening test which resulted in a warn reading. The driver was issued a seven-day immediate roadside prohibition as well as a violation ticket for speeding.
• On Oct. 30, police located an impaired driver during a roadblock set up at the intersection of Gibsons Way and Pratt Road, Gibsons. The driver, who almost drove through the roadblock without stopping, was exhibiting signs of intoxication. After two fail results on a roadside alcohol screening test, the 54-year-old female driver from Gibsons was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Mischief
• On Oct. 27 at around 2 p.m., a passerby reported a fire at the men’s public washroom in Hackett Park, Sechelt. The Sechelt Volunteer Fire Department cleared the washroom and determined the paper towel dispenser had been lit on fire. Police are reviewing surveillance video footage.
