Incident report from Oct. 17 to 24:
Thefts / Mischief
• On the evening of Oct. 16, thieves dismantled and stole a large wooden Holy Family Catholic Church sign that measures approximately seven feet by seven feet from its location at 5700 Nickerson Road, Sechelt. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2016-6969.
• Overnight on Oct. 20, a thief stole a tire off a vehicle parked in the 600 block of Crucil Road, Gibsons, and left behind the jack and tools. The stolen tire was a Michelin X Radial tire. No other theft or damage was reported.
• On Oct. 21 at around 11:20 p.m., a vandal smashed out the window of a vehicle parked in the 5700 block of Ebbtide Street, Sechelt. One of the residents heard the smashing sound but did not see any suspects. The suspect did not steal anything from inside the vehicle and no other damage was reported.
• Sometime around Oct. 15, a boat went missing or was stolen from its moorage in waters near the 2000 block of Thornborough Road, Langdale. The steel-hulled boat is approximately 11.2 metres long, has a blue bottom and white top with black stripe, and a teak windshield. The life ring has the boat’s name, Moon Shadow, written on it.
Suspicious Circumstances
• On Oct. 24, police attended an address in the 600 block of Martin Road, Gibsons, after the homeowner reported finding a possible land mine while gardening in the back yard. The homeowner described the suspicious object as rusted out and approximately 10 inches in diameter. The object turned out to be a piece of concrete foundation with the remnants of a metal tube that had been cut and pounded down on the top.
Collisions
• On Oct. 18, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 10800 block of Highway 101, Halfmoon Bay, after the driver of the first westbound vehicle attempted a U-turn and was struck by a second westbound vehicle on the driver’s side. Fortunately, none of the drivers or passengers sustained serious injuries but the first vehicle had to be towed from the scene. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for an unsafe U-turn.
• During the morning of Oct. 23, Sunshine Coast emergency services responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Garden Bay Road and Irvine’s Landing Road. The driver of one vehicle did not see the stop sign on Irvine’s Landing Road until it was too late, and collided with another vehicle driving on Garden Bay Road. The driver of one vehicle was transported to hospital, but fortunately no one was seriously injured.
Impaired Driver / Complaint
• Around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 19, a witness reported a possible impaired driver southbound on Highway 101 near Bay Road, Sechelt, after the vehicle was seen swerving all over the road and hitting a median at one point. Police located the vehicle, and after witnessing the vehicle swerve well over the fog line and the centre line into oncoming traffic, initiated an immediate traffic stop. The 45-year-old male driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
• On Oct. 23, a witness reported a possible impaired driver westbound on Pratt Road in Gibsons. The vehicle was seen swerving all over the road and onto the shoulder. Police spoke with the registered owner, who was not on the Coast that day. He advised he’d left his vehicle with a mechanic to have some repairs done, including on the steering components. It was determined the mechanic had been testing the vehicle on the road to see if it was pulling on one side.
