Incident report for Aug. 16 to 23:
Thefts
• On Aug. 18, police attended a shoplifting complaint at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after staff located a number of ripped off clothing tags. The suspect, a young adult male, was caught on surveillance video entering a change room with the clothing and then exiting, wearing the new clothing, and leaving the store without paying. After the suspect was spotted at a nearby business, police attended and located the male, but he fled on foot. The officer was just too quick for the suspect, and caught up with him inside the mall after a foot pursuit through the parking lot and back. The male was arrested and has since been released, with an upcoming court date in Sechelt Provincial Court.
• On Aug. 19, police attended a theft from a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after staff witnessed the suspect pay for some items, then return to the business, take a couple more items, put them in her bag and leave without paying for them. Staff followed the suspect out of the business and recovered the stolen items. The suspect was detained by staff until police arrived. The suspect was released on a promise to appear for court and banned from the business. The file is still under investigation.
Found property
• On Aug. 16, a Coast resident found a Go-Pro on Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay. The Go-Pro came with a number of distinctive accessories (File 16-5278). On Aug. 18, a silver mountain bike was found in the bushes near the 1600 block of Mission Road, Sechelt (File 16-5341). On Aug. 22, a Brodie men’s mountain bike was turned in from the 5400 block of Burley Place, Sechelt (File 16-5466). On Aug. 14, a Q10 Blackberry was turned in (File 16-5467). Owners may claim items with detailed description within 90 days of the noted date, referencing the related file number.
Impaired drivers
• On Aug. 17, police pulled over a vehicle that was missing half its bumper and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The 63-year-old male driver, who advised he’d consumed alcohol shortly before driving, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
• On Aug. 20, a witness reported a possible impaired driver get into a vehicle and drive off southbound from the 15500 block of Highway 101, Ruby Lake. Police located the suspect vehicle in Halfmoon Bay, which was caught on radar driving well over the posted speed limit. Police pulled the vehicle over and noted a strong odour of alcohol coming from the 25-year-old male driver. The driver, who admitted to drinking a short time earlier, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. He was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Collisions
• On Aug. 18, police attended a motor vehicle incident involving a pedestrian on Gibsons Way at Shaw Road, after a vehicle making a left turn onto Gibsons Way struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk. A witness confirmed the pedestrian had the green light and that the driver, who advised she had not seen the pedestrian, struck the pedestrian at slow speed. The pedestrian was taken to hospital for a routine assessment and the driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Aug. 21, police attended a single-vehicle collision in the 11700 block of Highway 101, Madeira Park. A southbound vehicle apparently lost control on the rain-slicked road, went off the road down a driveway, tipped onto its side and slid down before righting itself when it struck a pole. Fortunately, the driver and passengers suffered only minor injuries but the vehicle had to be towed. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Aug. 21, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 11700 block of Highway 101, after the first northbound vehicle lost control and spun out, causing the back end to strike the second vehicle, which was southbound and towing a utility trailer. The first vehicle and the trailer sustained the most damage and had to be towed, but fortunately no major injuries to either driver were reported. The driver of the first vehicle, who was not impaired, advised she’d lost control on the corner. The driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to keep right.
