Incident Report for Aug. 2 to 10:
Impaired Drivers
• On Aug. 2, police witnessed a vehicle without driving lights speeding north on Highway 101 near Pratt Road. The vehicle was stopped nearby and police immediately noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test and issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The rental vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
• On the afternoon of Aug. 5, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Davis Bay Road after the first southbound vehicle rear-ended a second vehicle. Police noted that the first driver was exhibiting signs of intoxication, which was confirmed after she failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and her vehicle was impounded. The driver was served a 24-hour driving prohibition, an administrative driving prohibition and released on a promise to appear. The file is still under investigation.
• On Aug. 6, a possible impaired motorcyclist was reported on BC Ferries after witnesses saw the motorcyclist drop his bike twice while attempting to park his motorcycle and exhibiting other signs of possible impairment. Police attended the Langdale ferry terminal and gave the motorcyclist a roadside alcohol screening test which resulted in a fail. The motorcyclist was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his motorcycle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Aug. 6, police conducted a traffic stop with a possible impaired driver on Garden Bay Road at Sinclair Bay Road. The driver, who did not have a driver's licence, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, a violation ticket for no driver’s licence, and was served an outstanding notice of driving prohibition. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Aug. 6, police conducted a traffic stop with a possible impaired driver in the 12800 block of Madeira Park Road. The driver, who was exhibiting clear signs of intoxication, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Mischief / Thefts
• Early on Aug. 4, residents in the 5700 block of Binnacle Avenue, Sechelt, reported that six or so teens were gaining access to cars parked along the street. The residents gave chase and as the teens ran down Marine Drive, one of the teens dropped a GPS unit which was later determined to have been stolen from a vehicle parked in the 5700 block of Marine Way, Sechelt. Other items stolen from vehicles in the area include a Canon Powershot Digital SLR camera and a pair of Nikon binoculars. Anyone with any information about these thefts is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-4886.
• Overnight on Aug. 4, a thief gained access to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 5700 block of Neptune Road, Sechelt, and stole a broken pair of headphones.
• Overnight on Aug. 7, a thief gained access to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 1200 block of Pointer Road, Gibsons, and stole several sets of keys and some credit cards. The owner recovered the credit cards nearby but the keys are still missing.
Collisions
• On Aug. 2, police attended a single vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Menacher Road, Madeira Park, after Emergency Health Services advised they were responding to a male trapped in his vehicle down an embankment. The Madeira Park Volunteer Fire Department also assisted and the driver was extracted without incident. The driver, who did not display any signs of intoxication, advised he had switched lanes and lost control after he felt his tire blow out. The driver was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The vehicle, which was towed out from down the embankment, had tires that had very little tread, and it is believed the poor tires combined with wet roads led to the incident. The driver has been issued a notice and order to replace the tires and the matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Aug. 6, police attended a single-vehicle incident at the intersection of King Road and Chaster Road, Gibsons, after the rider on a motorized bicycle struck a sandwich board sign and crashed his bike. The rider, who sustained non-life threatening injuries, was taken to hospital for assessment. The file is still under investigation.
