Incident Report for June 28 to July 4:

Impaired drivers

• On June 28, a witness reported a possible impaired driver eastbound on Highway 101 near Derby Road, West Sechelt, after the vehicle was seen driving at erratic speeds and swerving in its lane. The witness also advised the vehicle almost T-boned another vehicle near Wharf Road before pulling into a parking lot. Police located the parked vehicle and spoke with the still seated driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, advised he had consumed alcohol earlier. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test which resulted in a “warn.” The driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and his parents were called to drive him and his passengers home.

• Around noon on July 1, a witness reported a possible impaired driver on Highway 101 near Roberts Creek Road, after the vehicle was seen driving under the speed limit, swerving into the opposite lane and using the turn signal incorrectly. The vehicle was located in Gibsons and police noted the driver was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver refused to provide a breath sample and was subsequently issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• Around 9 p.m. on July 1, a possible impaired driver was reported heading east on Highway 101 from Roberts Creek. The vehicle was witnessed speeding and weaving in and out of its lane. Police located the vehicle in Gibsons and noted that the driver was exhibiting signs of impairment. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On July 2, police stopped a vehicle as the driver had an expired driver’s licence and noted the driver was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver advised she’d had her last drink shortly before driving and was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After a “fail” result, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

 • Also on July 2, police stopped a vehicle at a roadblock set up on Highway 101 and Brooks Road, Halfmoon Bay, and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver, who advised he’d last consumed alcohol an hour and a half before driving, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On July 3, witnesses reported a driver smoking drugs while parked at the Langdale ferry terminal. Police attended and located the male who initially denied the drug use, but then admitted he’d used drugs and then thrown away the drug paraphernalia. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded. The matter has been referred to RoadSafety BC.

Collision

• On July 2, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 6700 block of Highway 101, Sechelt. The driver, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, advised that he had become distracted while trying to operate the radio on the borrowed vehicle. The driver was transported to hospital as a precaution, and the vehicle had to be towed. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Assault

• During the evening of July 3, police were called after an employee of a restaurant on Cowrie Street was assaulted by an intoxicated male, during a heated argument about garbage left behind the business. Police arrested the intoxicated male, who was held in custody until he was sober. No criminal charges are being pursued.

Thefts

• Sometime since mid-June, a thief stole an old 50-horsepower grey outboard motor (either a Honda or Suzuki make). The motor had a long leg, pull start and grey epoxy from a previous repair on the motor cover, and is suitable as a kicker for a larger vessel. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-3896.

• Between mid-June and July 4, a thief stole an outboard motor from a boat parked in the 5700 block of Francis Peninsula Road, Madeira Park. The stolen motor is described as a black Mercury 9.9 horsepower outboard motor with a distinctive cracked mounting bearing. The serial number is 341582223736. Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-4052.
