RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for May 10 to 17:

Marine Flares

• Attention boaters: This is a reminder that there is a Flare Return Program sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Power and Sail Squadron and The Bitter End Boater’s Exchange on May 21 at 1044 Seamount Way, Gibsons. Please note the RCMP does NOT accept expired marine flares. At other times of the year, you may contact Transport Canada at 1-800-267-6687 to arrange disposal of expired flares.

Prescription Drug Drop-Off

• Saturday May 21 is National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day. Although most pharmacies accept expired or unwanted prescription drugs year-round, May 21 is a good reminder to check your medicine cabinets for old medication. Unused or expired medication should be returned to a pharmacy to prevent it from being misused or entering our landfills or waterways. Call your local pharmacy for more details.

Impaired Driver

• On May 10, police witnessed a possible impaired driver southbound on Highway 101 near Monkey Tree Lane, Sechelt, swerving back and forth over the double solid line and fog line. The vehicle then abruptly pulled over near a bus stop where police initiated a traffic stop. The 41-year-old female driver from Gibsons, who was exhibiting signs of impairment, advised she last consumed alcohol several hours prior to driving. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and after two “fail” results, the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Thefts

• On May 10, a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, reported capturing a theft on their surveillance camera. The suspect, described as a well-dressed Caucasian male in his sixties with grey hair and a goatee, wearing a blue sweater and tan pants, is seen taking a boxed item into a changing room. After the male left the business, staff found the empty box in the changing room. The file is still under investigation.

• On May 12, police attended a shoplifting complaint at a business in the 5700 block of Teredo Street after staff witnessed the suspect removing clothing off a sale rack outside the shop and walk away without paying for it. The suspect, described as an olive-skinned female in her twenties, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a slim build and pulled-up dark hair, was wearing a light-coloured print blouse that exposed a distinctive tattoo across her shoulder blades. The stolen items included a red striped dress and two pairs of elastic waist-banded Nygard brand jeans.

• On May 14, police attended a report of a theft of a purse from a business in Sechelt. The suspect, described as a Native female in her thirties or early forties, with dark straight hair, wearing a red t-shirt, dark pants, and carrying a green backpack, entered the premises pretending to be looking for her relative. Shortly after the suspect left, staff discovered the purse missing. Staff located the purse on the road across the street, but it was missing a large amount of cash and two pieces of costume jewelry that featured brass-coloured cones.

Found property

• On May 16, a resident turned in a tablet found in Winegarden Park in Gibsons. Owner has 90 days to claim with detailed description, reference file 16-2805.

Traffic

• On May 12, a southbound driver reported mischief to her vehicle after she noticed something being tossed out of the window of a white northbound vehicle in the 3300 block of Highway 101, Roberts Creek. The object, which appeared to be a white dinner plate, struck the southbound vehicle on the hood, shattered and scattered up the windshield. The startled driver was able to maintain control of her vehicle and drive home where she discovered the plate had caused minor damage where it struck the car. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
