RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for March 16 to 22: 

Thefts

•Overnight on March 11, a thief gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 4000 block of Browning Road, Wilson Creek, and stole loose change, a prescription bottle of Tylenol 3, and a pair of sunglasses (black frames with yellow lenses in a blue case, both marked “Auto Works Auto Body”). The suspect also attempted to start the vehicle by using a screwdriver in the ignition, damaging it in the process. Anyone with any information about this and other similar incidents in the Browning Road area is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-1428.

•Overnight on March 18, a thief stole an outboard boat motor, two five-gallon fuel tanks and a jerry can from a boat stored in the 5900 block of Sechelt Inlet Road, Sechelt. The motor is described as a black Yamaha 30-horsepower two-stroke engine that had a white, blue and red design on the side.

•On March 19, a thief stole two Apple 5C iPhones and other items left in a shopping bag at the side of a field in the 800 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, while the owners played soccer nearby. One of the iPhones is green and had a pink TNA brand case with an Aztec design on it, and the second iPhone is blue 16G model and was in a black Otter Box case. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-1511.

•Overnight on March 19, a thief stole a 12-foot aluminium boat that had been secured by chain and lock to a log on the beach at Willow Point near Burnett Road, Sechelt. The boat, named “Sea Nymph,” has a shiny eight-inch steel patch on the starboard side securing the oarlock.

Prowler

•On March 19, a prowler was reported in the 4000 block of Browning Road, Wilson Creek, after the suspect attempted to open the garage door while one of the residents was inside. The resident went outside to investigate and noted the unknown person wearing a headlamp walking away towards a public beach access trail before ducking into the bushes and turning off the headlamp. The suspect was seen again a short while later, but again, after spotting the resident, hid in the bushes. Patrols by police were negative. No other sightings or suspicious incidents were reported. 

Swerved to avoid crows

•On March 20, a witness reported a single-vehicle incident in the 500 block of Pratt Road, Gibsons, after a slow-moving vehicle entered a ditch. The driver continued driving in the ditch until coming to a culvert. The driver, who was not impaired, advised she had not noticed the ditch and had swerved to avoid hitting crows gathered on the roadway. The vehicle, which sustained damage to the undercarriage, was towed and the matter has been referred to ICBC. 

Impaired

•On March 15, a possible impaired driver was reported in the 13500 block of Highway 101, Garden Bay, after a witness noticed the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication before getting into the driver’s seat. Police located the vehicle a short distance away and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, who was displaying signs of intoxication, was given and failed a roadside alcohol-screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

•On March 18, police attended a single-vehicle incident at the intersection of Reef Road and Trail Avenue, Sechelt, after a witness reported a vehicle failed to negotiate the curve and went into the bushes. The lone occupant and driver, who was able to exit the vehicle on her own, was exhibiting signs of intoxication and was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After two “fail” results, the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Traffic stops

•On March 17, police conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Trail Avenue and Dolphin Street, Sechelt, that was being driven by an unlicensed driver. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, advised he’d had his last alcoholic beverage several minutes prior. The driver refused to provide a breath sample for a roadside alcohol-screening test so was arrested for refusal to provide a breath sample. The driver was released on a promise to appear and served a violation ticket for no driver’s licence, a 24-hour driving prohibition, and an administrative driving prohibition. The file is still under investigation.

•On March 17, police conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle that appeared to be trying to avoid police on Mason Road, Sechelt. The driver, who had an open can of alcohol in her lap and emitted the odour of alcohol, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test. After two “warn” results, the learner driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and a violation ticket for driving contrary to restrictions and her vehicle was towed.
