On Feb. 14, the brakes failed on this vehicle coming down Selma Park Road on Highway 101, and it collided into a telephone pole on the southbound side of the highway, shearing the pole. The driver was taken to hospital for minor injuries.

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Feb. 8 to 15:

Collisions

•On Feb. 9, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Fairway Avenue near North Gale Avenue, Sechelt, after a southbound vehicle swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle on a steep, sharp curved section of the road. The driver lost control of his vehicle and ended up off-road, striking a tree. The driver did not sustain any serious injury, but the vehicle suffered extensive damage and had to be towed.

•Around 1 p.m. on Feb. 10, a hit and run was reported at a business in the 12600 block of Highway 101 in the Pender Harbour area, after a vehicle struck the side of the building and drove off without stopping. The incident was captured on security video camera, and RCMP are continuing to investigate the matter.

•On Feb. 11, RCMP attended the intersection of Cemetery Road and Keith Road in Gibsons after a large disposal truck rolled over and lost its load in the ditch. The driver was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

•On Feb. 14, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Selma Park Road, Sechelt, after the brakes failed on a vehicle coming down Selma Park Road, and the vehicle collided into a telephone pole on the southbound side of the highway, shearing the pole. The driver was taken to hospital for minor injuries. Once utilities crews dealt with the downed lines, the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Thefts / Mischief

•Late on Feb. 9, a thief stole a 21-foot-long Current Designs orange kayak. The kayak, which is Libra XT model and had a broken keel and missing middle hatch, had been stored in a backyard in the 400 block of Gower Point Road, Gibsons. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-786.

•Between Feb. 12 and 15, a thief gained access to a business in the 700 block of School Road, Gibsons by cutting through a chain-link fence, and siphoned a large amount of fuel from a work vehicle. The thief also cut the fuel line to bypass a siphon protector in the gas port. No other theft or damage was reported.

•Overnight on Feb. 12, residents on Sunnyside Road in Gibsons had tires slashed on two of their vehicles, parked in their driveway. No suspects have yet been identified, but police are asking people to come forward if they witnessed anything suspicious in the neighbourhood or had any of their property damaged.

Traffic

•On Feb. 9, police witnessed a vehicle with a broken tail light weaving in its lane on Highway 101 near Field Road, Sechelt. The vehicle was pulled over and police noted an odour of fresh marijuana coming from it. The driver, who did not have a valid driver’s licence, was arrested for prohibited driving, and subsequently released on an appearance notice to appear in court.
