Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Dec. 1 to 8:
Road rage
• Police were called by two drivers after an apparent road rage incident in Gibsons. The incident started after one driver was alleged to have been driving slowly, while the other driver was alleged to have been tailgating. In this case both parties called police, who intervened before any violence occurred. Driving complaints should be reported to RCMP, and motorists should never leave their vehicles to confront another driver.
Suspicious circumstances
• Late on Nov. 30, staff attended to an alarm at a business in the 4300 block of Highway 101 but found no signs of entry. The following morning, staff found that a large inflatable snowman had been moved outside a gated compound and another inflatable creature was halfway under a gate. Other items in the compound were knocked over and moved around. Due to the fact that nothing was actually stolen, it was determined that the strong winds were likely the cause of the mischief.
Found property
• On Dec. 3, an amplifier was found in the bushes in the 400 block of Marine Drive, Gibsons. Owner may claim with detailed description within ninety days, reference file 15-8355.
Impaired driver
• On Dec. 4, while conducting a Counter-Attack road check on Highway 101 at Largo Road in Roberts Creek, police noticed a vehicle approach the check-stop then turn around and drive off in the opposite direction. Police followed and found the vehicle parked on the shoulder, with two males in the process of exiting the vehicle. The driver was exhibiting signs of intoxication, and was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Thefts
• In the early evening of Dec. 2, a witness reported a suspicious male rummaging through a vehicle parked in parking lot in the 5000 block of Davis Bay Road. When the suspect saw the witness, he fled the scene on foot. The owner of the vehicle was advised and determined that nothing had been stolen. Police made patrols of the area but did not locate the suspect. No other reports of similar incidents were received.
• Sometime between Dec. 1 and 4, a considerable amount of gas was siphoned from a car’s gas tank on Crucil Lane in Gibsons. Information suggests that there may have been additional gas thefts in the area. Police ask vehicle owners to monitor their fuel levels, and report any suspect thefts or suspicious persons in the area.
Animals
• On Dec. 3, police attended to an injured owl found by a motorist on the side of Highway 101 near Havies Road, Sechelt. The motorist also contacted the BC Conservation Officer Service who in turn contacted the Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Police located the owl, which was still alive but incapable of moving very far, and kept an eye on it until Gibsons Wildlife Rehab volunteers arrived. The owl, which did not appear to have any broken wings, was taken by the volunteers to be nursed back to health from a possible concussion.
• On Dec. 5 at around 6:30 p.m., a hit and run was reported on Highway 101 after a pedestrian and her dog were in the crosswalk near Westly Road, Davis Bay. An eastbound pick-up truck struck the dog, before the dog was hit by a second vehicle. Neither driver stopped to assist the pedestrian or her deceased dog. Police remind drivers to watch for pedestrians and for pedestrians to make sure they are visible to drivers, especially at night and in inclement weather.
