Police Report

RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Sept. 14 to 21:

Police Assault

• Around 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, staff at a business on Wharf Avenue in Sechelt called police after an intoxicated man started hitting an ATM machine. Police attended and arrested the man for causing a disturbance. The man threatened to assault one of the police officers, then later spat twice in the face of another officer. The 40-year-old Sechelt man has been charged with assaulting a police officer and uttering threats, and has an upcoming court date.

Commenting on the incident, Const. Harrison Mohr with Sunshine Coast RCMP said that “although spitting in someone’s face does not break bones or leave scars, it can be a frightening experience for the officer, who does not know whether they have just contracted a serious disease that could have life-long implications.”

Marine Incident

• Around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, Sunshine Coast RCMP and the Coast Guard responded to a report of two males setting off flares over the water near the 500 block of Marine Drive in Gibsons. It was later determined that no one was in distress, and the males were warned it is an offence to set off flares in the absence of an emergency.

The stolen clothing includes a long sleeve black and olive green shirt with large white flowers and red and black swirls on the front, a beige Nomads zip-hoodie with ruching on the sleeves and front, a tie-dyed blue dress and a soft grey drapey vest. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• Shortly after 9 p.m. on Sept. 19, police stopped a vehicle with a burnt-out headlight. The driver initially denied consuming alcohol but then advised he’d consumed alcohol a couple of hours prior. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol-screening test, his vehicle was impounded for 30 days, and he is prohibited from driving for 90 days.

• Around 1 a.m. on Sept. 20, a vehicle pulled out in front of a police car suddenly without signalling, then drifted over the fog line, narrowly avoiding a collision with an address sign. Traffic

• On Sept. 16 a witness reported a near miss between a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Gibsons Way and Mahan Road, after the driver of a left-turning vehicle failed to notice a pedestrian in the marked crosswalk, forcing the pedestrian to run out of the way to avoid getting hit. The witness was able to provide police with the vehicle licence plate as well as a description of the vehicle and driver. Police located the driver and issued him a violation ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

• On Sept. 18, police attended a two-vehicle incident on the Sunshine Coast Highway near Malcolm Creek Road, in Roberts Creek. An eastbound vehicle came around a curve, started fish-tailing, crossed the double solid centre line, and struck a westbound vehicle, causing it to spin around before coming to a stop. Both vehicles sustained major damage, but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Neither speed nor alcohol impairment were factors. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for crossing a double solid line, and the matter has been referred to ICBC.
