Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Sept. 1 to 8:

Impaired / Prohibited drivers

•During the evening of Sept. 1, police pulled over a vehicle on Madeira Park Road. The officer found the driver of the vehicle was the same driver he had issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition to on Aug. 22, after he had been talking on his cell phone and failed two alcohol-screening tests. The vehicle the driver was using during the August stop is still in the impound lot, and now the vehicle he was driving on Sept. 1 has also been impounded. Police are recommending a charge of driving while prohibited against the man.

• On Sept. 1, police initiated a traffic stop in the 5700 block of Teredo Street and noted the driver exhibiting possible signs of intoxication. The driver, who advised he’d consumed alcohol with his meal a short time prior, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test. After two “warn” results, the driver was issued a three-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition .

• On Sept. 4, police conducted a traffic stop with a possible impaired driver in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons. The driver, who exhibited signs of intoxication, advised he’d consumed one alcoholic beverage a short time prior. The driver was given and failed two roadside alcohol-screening tests and was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Shoplifting / Theft

• On Sept. 2, staff at a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt, reported a theft after reviewing security camera footage. A female suspect was seen filling up her basket with goods and then attempting to hide behind a display while putting the items into a large bag. The suspect, who has been identified by police, then left the business without paying. Police have recommended a charge of theft against the woman.

• On Sept. 2, while on the 15:45 ferry sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, a visitor to the Coast left her black backpack containing some shoes, personal items and a slim profile black Acer laptop in a washroom stall. The visitor checked with BC Ferries lost and found but her belongings had not been turned in. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 15-6294.

• On the evening of Sept. 3, a thief stole a purse out of a vehicle parked at Davis Road and Shaw Road, Gibsons. The doors were locked but due to a recent damage to the vehicle, it appears the locks were easily defeated. The purse was a Zimbabwean straw oval shaped basket with double handles and contained various identification and credit cards.

Break and enters

• Early on Sept. 4, a thief gained entry to a work yard in the 5900 block of Mason Road, Sechelt, entered a transit bus and proceeded to destroy the fare box.

The thief then stole the small amount of cash that was inside the fare box. Anyone with any information about this mischief and theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 15-6306.

• Between Sept. 4 and 7, an attempted break and enter was reported at a construction site in the 12600 block of Highway 101, Madeira Park. The suspect tried to pry open a rear door but did not manage to gain entry. No other damage or theft was reported.

Shots reported

• Late on Sept. 4, a resident in the 1100 block of Chaster Road called police after hearing someone yell, “Put the gun down,” followed by a gunshot. The resident also reported that a loud house party in the area went silent right afterwards. Police located and attended the party house but found no evidence of any firearm discharge. The resident then updated police to advise that he had mistaken the sound from a movie his family was watching as a real life event. Police confirmed that the movie being watched contained scenes of gunfire.

Collisions

• On Sept. 4, a southbound motorist was passed by a motorcyclist on Highway 101 near Whitaker Road, Davis Bay. As the motorcyclist entered the corner, he dragged one of his saddlebags, causing him to leave the roadway. The motorcyclist, who appeared uninjured, walked up to the highway where the other motorist had stopped to provide any assistance and advised he was fine. The motorcyclist then flagged down a second vehicle, hopped in and left the scene. Police have not been able to locate the motorcycle’s registered owner due to outdated licence information. The file is still under investigation.

• On Sept. 5, police attended a two-vehicle incident at Pratt Road and Gower Point Road, Gibsons, involving a vehicle and motorcycle. A vehicle had pulled out from Pratt Road into the westbound lane of Gower Point Road, but instead of completing the turn, stopped halfway in the lane for the motorcycle that was coming westbound on Gower Point Road. The motorcyclist, anticipating the vehicle to continue making its turn, was unable to slow down and stop in time to avoid collision, so he laid his bike down and slid into the front of the vehicle. The motorcyclist was taken to hospital for minor injuries. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
