Break and enter

• Between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on June 5, a thief gained entry to a residence in the 2700 block of Lower Road in Roberts Creek, and stole a laptop computer, money, identification and jewelry. The point of entry appears to be an unlocked door. The file is still under investigation.

Fraud

• On June 5, a Coast resident reported a bank fraud after a regular payment he made to a foreign company was rejected. The resident received an email that appeared to be from the company advising that there was an issue with the account and instructing the resident to try wiring money to a different account. The resident did so, and this time the transaction was successful. After not receiving the purchased goods, the resident contacted the business and was told they didn’t know anything about a failed transaction or any follow-up emails. It appears the fraudster hacked into the resident’s emails and manipulated the business’s account to make it appear the transaction failed. The resident found out his funds went into a U.S. account, and police in that jurisdiction are investigating.

• On June 6, a thief drove onto a property in the 700 Hillcrest Road, Gibsons, gained entry to a building and took out a chainsaw. A witness reported seeing the suspect then put the chainsaw into the vehicle before driving off. It was believed the suspect would be trying to leave the coast so an assistance request was sent to West Vancouver Police, and the suspect was located at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal and arrested for break and enter and theft under $5,000.
