A Mission man is in RCMP custody, while a second suspect is at large in connection to several recent break-ins on Nelson Island.

On May 30 at approximately 9 a.m., Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a report of an interrupted break and enter on Nelson Island, after a neighbour discovered two unidentified men in her neighbours cabin.

"The witness called a water taxi in the area, which then followed the suspects who had fled the area in a stolen boat, and the witness took a photograph of the suspects on her phone as they fled the scene," said Cpl. Steve Chubey.

RCMP received the call approximately 9:15 a.m. and immediately dispatched the West Coast Marine (RCMP) vessel "Higget" to assist. Conservation also provided assistance. The stolen boat was recovered abandoned on shore by a cabin in the Agamemnon Channel near Egmont.

Chubey said both suspects were located near one of the cabins by RCMP and Conservation. One of the suspects, a 33-year-old Mission man, was arrested without incident, while the second suspect fled into the forest on foot and is still outstanding. A vehicle and trailer were reported stolen in the area near the time of the incident and was recovered in Halfmoon Bay. Police believe that the second suspect may be responsible.

The RCMP have identified the second suspect; however the investigation into the break and enter continues, and charges have yet to be laid. The RCMP has seized a large quantity of property which they are attempting to link to other potential break-ins in the area.

RCMP is asking anyone with information on the suspects or other break-ins in the Egmont area to contact Const. Tracy Dubnyk at 604-885-2266 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
