Phone scammer threatens harm to victim

From April 27 to 29, a member of the public received a number of calls from an unknown male with foreign accent stating that he had a parcel to send and that $500 was to be transferred via Western Union.

From April 27 to 29, a member of the public received a number of calls from an unknown male with foreign accent stating that he had a parcel to send and that $500 was to be transferred via Western Union. The last call included threats of violence if the money was not transferred.

The Sunshine Coast RCMP is warning the public to report all suspicious calls of this nature immediately.

"Often, these thieves are preying on the elderly, posing as trusted members of their family, the public or popular companies," said Cpl. Steven Chubey. "Whatever you do, do not send the money and call the police if you have any doubts."

Police are requesting that other members of the public who have received similar calls report it to the RCMP and to call the Phone Busters hotline number (1-888-495-8501) to receive information and guidance.
