Paraglider tangled in tree

Soames Hill

A paraglider spent more time than planned on the peak of Soames Hill on B.C. Day when moments after take-off he got tangled in a tree.

The Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to the paraglider in distress by dispatch at 12:48 p.m. on Aug. 3, after the man used his cell phone to call for help.

“We were able to get his cell phone number from dispatch and we called him back,” said Gibsons Fire Chief Rob Michael.

Firefighters soon realized the paraglider wasn’t hurt but needed help getting down from the tree.

“Luckily he was an experienced climber so all we needed to do was toss him some rope and he was able to get himself down,” Michael said.

“He did the right thing by not trying to make his way down himself. Although he was embarrassed, he recognized the need for assistance.”
