The Town of Gibsons is hosting an open house starting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the Cedars Inn to unveil the latest harbour area plan.

In 2009, the Town of Gibsons engaged a team of consultants to undertake the first phase of the harbour area planning process; to develop a vision for the Harbour area based on community input and consensus. In phase 2, the consultant team investigated the economic viability of the vision plan, and refined the plan accordingly.

In the past several months, the Town and its consultant team have been engaged in further refining the results of the first two phases, and amalgamating these with the results of other planning investigations that have been undertaken over the past decade or more, to prepare a Harbour Area Plan that is the culmination of this process.

According to the Town, this plan brings together more than 10 years of work into a clear and concise strategy for sensitive growth in the Harbour Area, balances the community's vision and aspirations for the harbour area with economic viability, provides a basis for revision to the harbour area portion of the official community plan, last revised in 2005, and sets the stage for incorporating a response to climate change into the Town's planning policy.

Members of the community are invited to offer comments and to ask questions of members of the consultant team and Town staff at the open house.

Vandalism fundraiser

Gibsons United Church is hosting a family fun soccer tournament Oct. 8, at Shirley Macey Field, to raise money to repair damage caused by vandals.

Sunshine Coast RCMP is still investigating the vandalism, which took place between Sept. 7 and 9, and caused almost $2,000 worth of damage.

The incident has disrupted many of the activities hosted by the church, among them music and dance lessons, choral singing, fitness programs, Scouts, martial arts and many 12-step programs.

The church invites soccer players from six to 60 to participate in the tournament that kicks off at 8 a.m., Oct. 8 at Shirley Macey Field.

Everyone's name will be pulled from a hat to create mixed teams, which will compete in a round robin format. The cost to play is $2 per person with all money going towards repairing the damaged church.

There will be a concession stand selling chili and hot dogs, 50-50 draws and donation cans around the field.

Participants can pre-register by calling Donna Gopp at 604-886-2998.
