One man is dead and a second seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Highway 101 at Rat Portage Hill.

Sunshine Coast RCMP said they received a report of a rollover collision involving a pickup truck with two male occupants at 9:12 a.m.

Both occupants were transported to Sechelt Hospital where the 67-year-old driver was pronounced dead and the 62-year-old passenger was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with serious injuries, RCMP said in a release.

Staff Sgt. Poppy Hallam told reporters that the driver had lost control of his vehicle in the Gibsons-bound lane of the highway near Jack Road.

The highway was reduced to single-lane alternating traffic for much of the morning while emergency crews and investigators from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service worked at the scene. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an investigation.

In their release, Sunshine Coast RCMP thanked “the many members of the public who stopped to provide assistance to the occupants of the vehicle and provide valuable information to the emergency service personnel on scene.”

Sunshine Coast Transit said the accident put buses using the highway about 30 minutes behind schedule. According to Drive BC, the road was expected to be fully open again by 3:30 p.m.
