There have been no signs of pollution or debris following a fire that engulfed at 28-foot Bayliner pleasure craft at Plumper Cove on Keats Island last Tuesday.
“Coast Guard assessed the area for debris and upwelling, but did not find any sign of marine pollution or debris. It is likely that any remaining gasoline dissipated soon after the fire and sinking,” a spokesperson for Canadian Coast Guard told Coast Reporter on Friday.
A Coast Guard crew is expected to return next week to assess the area “and confirm there is no further risk to pollute,” said the spokesperson. If after the assessment the vessel is not found to be a hazard and there is no further risk of pollution, recovery of the vessel will be the owner’s responsibility.
The owner of the vessel is not known at this time.
A crew from Gibsons-based RCM-SAR Station 14 attended the boat fire after it was called in on July 30 at approximately 2:50 p.m. No passengers were on board. The crew towed the boat from Keats Island to open waters to remove the risk of spreading the fire as the Bayliner burned the to the water line.It remains in the location where it sank. The coast guard is unaware of the cause of the fire.
