No more redesigns for George

Gibsons Harbour

Developer Klaus Fuerniss has made it clear he will not be accepting any more redesigns to the George Hotel.

In a public letter to Gibsons council received on June 2, Fuerniss expressed his growing impatience with the hotel project.

“I can no longer make changes without jeopardizing the entire project,” Fuerniss wrote.

He went on to say that “any further change will make it impossible for the George to operate as a destination hotel.”

Gibsons Mayor Wayne Rowe said the letter does not affect the Town’s process.

“Individual councillors have to look at it and weigh whether they feel there is any further room there, or whether that’s pretty much the project they are being asked to make a decision on, as is,” Rowe said Wednesday.

The architect for the George has made six redesigns for the project so far. On June 16, council gave first reading to an official community plan (OCP) amendment that allows for an exception to be made on the site of the proposed George Hotel for a seven-storey residential building and an eight-storey hotel.

Staff has recommended that a public information session be scheduled before the public hearing on the OCP amendment. Rowe said the public hearing would not take place any earlier than September.
